Interesting informed take on the Tundra Recall

Agree. We actually let a Patrol owner in our LC Club. Lol! He had several, and at one point was considering buying a diesel Patrol off him. The issue was all his were RHD, and it was becoming a PITA to get insurance. I forget the specific model, but for sure that model/year had stronger axles than the 80 Series LC. Still, aside from brand loyality, they (LCs’) are typically the most reliable 4x4. I’m a huge fan of 4WD 24-7 on YT.

I beat the hell out of mine off-roading for 10 yrs and never had a failure. Some view the 80 Series LC the pinnacle of Toyota 4x4 vehicles. Based on my experience and many of those in our club, I would agree.

 

All price. I built a 2025 Ram Laramie 1500 on website with similiar equipment to my previous 2015 minus the diesel engine. Checked some but not all option boxes. $82k sticker for a middle grade trim.

Core Ram customer is a value shopper. Flipping a customer that paid low 40s for a truck 6-7 years to pay low 70s driveout is a no go for Ram. If they can get a mid level Tundra in the 50s they will change brands in a heartbeat. Their bottom line trumps their brand alliance.

Jeeps are the same problem. Stellantis got caught not knowing their customers and sales are in free fall.

 

Here's and interesting take. Hyundai and Kia use the same 2.0l engine that was throwing number three rod bearings. It was always the number three bearing when the engine grenated and it happened so often there is currently a law suit against the company. They issued a safety recall and the fix they came up with was to reprogram the ECU so that when the knock sensor detected the failing bearing, the ECU would limit the power output so that the engine would last long enough to allow the driver to exit the roadway. Hyundai/Kia claims that the engine failures were caused by manufacturing machining debri. The problem still has not been fixed and this is going back to 2018. Let's hope the 3.4l doesn't follow the same path and that the engine machining debri is just not an excuse given because it sounds correctable.

Toyota has used the crankshaft bearing cap sub-assembly/integrated main bearing cap for DECADES.

Compression Ratio - 18.6:1 (1HD-T & 1HD-FT) or 18.8:1 (1HD-FTE)

 

Much closer to square than V35A.

 

Also both diesel so with that compression ratio comes way more overbuilding the TT3.4 may suffer from build it to spec I.e. Pennies saved per unit equals more shareholder value and profits.

 

Is it possible to get lspi with these trucks? Could that combined with chinesium metal? Isn’t the six sigma or whatever supposed to catch things like manufacturing defects?

 

So while I was stewing about this recall and how Toyota Canada was ignoring me, I put up a rather negative review on the Better Business Bureau website about my 2022 Tundra. Today, I got a response from the BBB that someone from Toyota is going to respond!

I am so shocked and also excited that someone else is going to tell me "go pound sand".

Time will tell, because at this point, TM is down since the recall was announced.

Low Speed Pre-Ignition MIGHT be something to consider.

All aluminum used in these are smelted by Toyota Bodine Aluminum in Troy, MO and Jackson, TN. It appears as MOST, INC, but it is Toyota.

You shouldn't have to go to the BBB to get a response from Toyota. Toyota Customer service is pathetic. You call the 1-800 number and it's just a call center with employees that have no knowledge of Toyota products. The time I had to deal with them I had to keep escalating to "I want to talk to a manager" and was finally able to talk to someone from Toyota.

 

I have been frustrated with Toyota's response with issues on my vehicle. Having owned 7 Toyotas, I thought they were different than the other companies. However this experience reminds me of the horror I went through with my 1984 Ford Bronco II. Toyota has become an American company.
I will most likely today, if I get the price right and an OK trade on my Tundra, have first non Toyota in 30 years.

 

Just getting caught up... planning to buy a 2024 Limited 4x4 6.5 bed tomorrow, 4/24 order date according to the vin lookup on toyotas website. I will confirm actual build date when I get there, but thinking it'll be 5/24.

I'm getting 10k off the total price w/ add-ons, 2-3k below base msrp, so it's a good deal. Should I wait for an even later model?? My original logic was that the engine block code replacement was updated as was the process to clean, so hoping that solves most of the issues, but I could leverage the bad press to get a sweet deal.

Not too concerned and still planning to go through with it, I just wish I was a little beyond the april bearing end date of 4/24. Getting an extended warranty after no no matter what.

 

You are in an interesting go, no go, situation. The state of play is that you can get a stinker with any of the new trucks including a Tundra. I would make the decision based on who you think has low odds of a problem and who can best remediate a problem if you do run into and issue. If the GMC service manager is a close friend that could tip the scales. I'm happy with the Tundra and have no service issues. GMC is my #2 choice but the 22 gallon tank for the gassers is a no go and the baby max is really complicated and not thrilling power. Pick your poison..

 

I’m a Toyota guy to a fault, coming from 2010 4Runner. Maybe that’ll be my undoing but I still trust them more than other manufacturers. I like the news/rumor that “long blocks are going to be made available” and that Toyota seems to be actively trying to resolve and get ahead of this situation vs denying like I’ve seen with others.

I always can fall back on my 4Runner if something were to happen.

 

I personally would wait for Toyota to iron out the issues and use the 2024 Tundra and later manufactured trucks as the basis for if the issue has been corrected. I’d wait another couple years if it has to be a gen 3 Tundra

 

I'm not a Toyota guy. I'm not really loyal to any company. I had a bad Ford experience. Knowing what I know now, having had the Tundra for 1year, if I had it to do all over, I'd buy another Tundra.

 

I second that waiting a few years! Toyota seems to be struggling with all this!

I just bought one two weeks ago. Seems like a good time to get a ‘deal’ and the chances of problems are super low.

I am engaged in deep discussions with Toyota Canada to see if they are going to step up and go from there.

They have reminded me that they are a different company and anything the US Toyota puts into effect doesn’t apply to the 10,000 trucks up here.

I have also noticed more 2022’s popping up for sale at about 10% less than expected.

I expect to hear back from the Customer Service this coming week to tell me where to shove it!

As far as using the truck, we are going to use it in town for light duty for now. Just not to tow the trailer or go out of town. I will also have to renew my CAA plan so they can come and get it if it dies.

 

I'm doing the opposite. The Tundra has become the roadtrip vehicle of choice right now because it seems like I'm always pulling something. Another North Caroline to Ft Lauderdale 2K RT coming up next week.
