I have a 2014 SR5 double cab I bought used in 2018. It is blue ribbon in color. I started noticing some peeling on the front of the rear door, in the groove (it was not there when I purchased truck.) It was a little spot at first and now is noticeably growing. There is another spot under the hood, right in front of the wipers that I can see from the driver's seat. Again, it is growing larger. Truck is rarely driven and has been cared for properly since I have had it. I really am surprised a Toyota vehicle would do this. Anyone else have or heard of this happening?

I wouldnt blame toyota specifically. While I have seen some issues with blue toyota paint colors, especially the clear coat on them, the truck it is close to being a 9 year old vehicle and Ive never seen an 8 year old vehicle with pristine paint unless it was a toy and rarely used and garaged or show car. Weather, sun, contaminants like bird poop, road grime, salt all degrade the paint and over the years it takes a toll.

Who know how the previous owner's cared for it, it may have never seen a wash and wax. It could also have been in a accident at some point, and often those repairs will chip or flake years later. It could have been parked under trees, had bird poop left on it for months, who knows.

And not to dig at ya, but that pic shows the truck is pretty dirty and the finish appears dull, indicating that it has not been cleaned/waxed in a long time. Keeping the vehicle clean and waxed goes a long way in keeping the paint looking ok, especially as the years roll on.

Here is a pic of my 2016, just two years older than yours. I also got it used.

And it is a black truck, the worst paint to try and keep looking good. But I wash it every 1-2 weeks, wax it 2-3 times a year and take care of the finish. Its not perfect, as you get chips and wear and such using the truck as a truck and driving around but if you stay on top of the finish maintenance it can look decent a long time.

Looks like a respray job where the areas flaking weren't properly cleaned and scuffed. Did this vintage have each body panel marked with the VIN sticker?

Unfortunately common with the blue ribbon metallic paint. I was on a Facebook group that had quit a few. I reported it to Toyota and if they ever did a campaign like they did for the white paint they would then cover the cost. I had all the areas fixed and traded for a 21 cement. Call and log the issue with Toyota just in case but I wouldn't hold your breath. The fact it was only a color for two years means there isn't a ton of them to begin with so chances of Toyota caring are slim in my opinion.

Also the problem isn't specific to tundras. If you search Tacoma pages the same exact issue exists with the blue ribbon metallic.

Thanks, good to know. I love the color but yea, yours looks exactly like what mine is doing. If prices weren't so crazy I would definitely be trading it in.

No worries, we had a bad storm the night before and I was actually taking it out to clean it up. I knew when I saw the pictures I should have waited til after I washed it but was afraid I would forget about it.

Likewise with my 2015 blue ribbon. Exact same spot between the drivers door and backseat door. I touched it up with a bottle of touch up paint from Toyota. I wax my truck 2 times a year since I bought it in 2017.

I started noticing the peeling paint again under the hood right where the wipers are as explained by the original post. I was going to try to touch that area up to, but its a hard spot to get to. upload_2023-7-22_18-2-24.png

I think all White tacos and 4runners from 2010 to 2017? (maybe all yotas) have a huge problem with flaking.

Toyota struggles with paint on multiple vehicles. We traded in our 2015 RAV4 in MGM and it was peeling all over the place, hood, doors, body.

It was one of the reasons I got rid of it as it just seemed to be accelerating. Disappointing as otherwise, it was a great car.

FWiW, there was an identical RAV4 at work that parked near us exhibiting the same symptoms.

My GF has a 2016 Honda Civic and she had issues with the paint near the rear window. She had to pay out of her own pocket to fix as Honda wouldn’t cover it u see warranty. I think it was less than 4 years old at that time.

Now she’s having paint coming off under the hood where you can only see from looking from the back like previous posts. So paint is not only a Toyota issue.

I have a 2015 Tundra, blue paint. Purchased the truck in September. Peeling paint is only getting worse. I called Toyota corporate number to call in my vehicle issue. I was told that if enough people call in, Toyota will create a Customer Support Program in regards to the paint issue. The number to call is 800-331-4331. Please tell them as much as you can. I also mentioned my peeling paint is not a result of the sun as they like to say. I told them it's in my jams, under the hood, on the tailgate and more. I called months ago and just again today as the peeling paint is getting worse. I told them the paint is peeling because she asked if it was bubbling. I told her it is not bubbling, there is no rust, etc... I also plan on emailing with photos attached as I found it's best to have things in writing as well. I told her I will spread the word for people to call in to complain so we can get help from Toyota. This has not happended to any other vehicle I have owned. This is just horrible.

Mine is '14 in MGM and has spots that are peeling too. Dad drives a '14 white Taco and sister drives a '17 white Camry. All have paint issues to some degree.

Just get the touch up pen from the local auto parts store and cover it up. When mine gets "too bad" I'll just have a local shop repaint it.
