My truck recently started making a clunking noise whenever I put it into drive or reverse. I noticed it only does it after sitting for a while like when I go to work in the morning. I greased all the u joints but its still making the noise. The truck only has 85k miles on it.
I took a video of the noise here.

That's just the normal ABS check I believe. Both of mine do it.

What's that you mean? If it was normal wouldn't it have done it since I got it?

I bought my 2020 with 18k on it and it’s done it everyday I start it up and go.

    It’s the ABS check.

But the ABS check on mine happens at 6 MPH.

So does it do the ABS check everytime you shift from drive to reverse or reverse to drive? This almost sounds like something's broken inside the drive shaft. I'm not entirely convinced because the other guy below said his happens at 6mph. I've read other threads saying some people have it at 15mph. This happens when the truck is still, driving around I don't hear any noise.

Can you hear it inside the cabin? If so can you post a video? I have a 21 with 140k, I bought it recently. When I first start the truck and put it into drive, there is a weird grinding / clunking noise when it shifts to 2nd gear. Not sure if it is the same thing

In the cabin, I can only hear if I lower down the window. I don't hear any noise when driving. The sound you hear in the video is what I hear.

Grease your driveshaft so you can weigh that out of the possible culprits.

Do you feel it as well or only hear it? My truck does something similar and it's the carrier pin in the rear diff. Common on higher mileage tundras. Mine has over double the mileage yours does though. And mine is much more noticeable when the rear diff is warm.

Hmm. Ok. Maybe Jack up your rear end and grab the drive shaft and twist it back and forth and see if you have abnormal amount of play or backlash in the rear diff. If you do, I'd suspect carrier pin. If not, must be something else and I have no idea.

That sounds like bushings or leaf springs loading up. Have you been in a very dusty environment lately?

From what I can hear that is normal.

Just curious why, did a bunch of dust, maybe some rocks too, get all lodged up in there and its causing the noise?

It always amazes me where I find dust after spending time off-road. Muddy water as well. It will go everywhere and things will never be the same :)

Now your bushings and springs are not riding/setting on nice clean surfaces any longer. As they move the dust and dirt are obstructing their normal motion against each other. Not much but a little. This obstruction causes the creaky sound that you are showing. With some time and some rain this will improve.

That makes alot of sense. It was my first time offroading that much since I got the truck so the sounds scared me at first.
It does show how tough these trucks are from what I put it through.

From what I could gather nothing under the truck seemed worn out, there is just alot of dust everywhere. I have noticed in the past two days, the sound is less harsh so that would probably explain it. Going to give it some more time and see how it goes. Thanks alot

Thank goodness someone said this. I was wondering the exact same thing and it happens every time at start up around 7+mph mark. I will say, that sometimes it is a more aggressive sound to where it's a harsh clunk but that doesn't happen very often. It's mostly always just the typical minor clunk noise when speeding up from a cold start.

Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner. To clarify, when I start my truck, put it in drive and roll forward, at around 5 mph, I get the clunk noise.

I will check to see if it is only the initial start up or if it happens every time.

No problem. The noise on my Tundra has been very minimal the past few days. I think its what @mverkaik said, bunch of sand and dirt under my truck. I'm not worried about it anymore

The only thing I see is that your carrier bearing looks crooked. May be a normal position, I haven't looked at mine to check. But I THINK those slots should be even. I could be wrong.
