I like the idea of having a bed rack around the softopper. Definitely would be helpful in every way. But you'd have to figure out how to make the side flaps accessible still for reaching in the bed. Swing out side mounts for gear.
Plus you get some armor to protect the softopper.

The ARE MX topper on my green 2006 RCLB had that kind of boot originally. It mated the gasket on the cab window perfectly and never rubbed the paint. It lasted about 10 years until my dog decided to eat it to punish me for leaving her in the back too long. They are nice because you can open the sliding window and carry long objects or let a lonely dog crawl into the cab to puke on the upholstery. Also you can leave the sliding glass open so the doors slam easier and never worry about rain getting in. Highly recommended, I would get one again. If you have one, it's a good idea to take a rag soaked with armor all or similar stuff and wipe between cab and gasket monthly to get dust out and make it last longer.

I don't get it. You always see 1st Gen 4runners with the toppers cut like this, but those have an open back, so I don't see the point to this unless they've cut off the back wall of the truck and put seats back there or something

I've never seen that before. At first I thought it was one of of those little sleeper campers I used to see in the 90's.

    upload_2024-8-17_2-15-29.png
And I still don't really see the point of these. I'd much rather have a full hard topper

I'm fascinated that these were referred to as both sleepers or campers, is sleeper a trucking reference? Surely no one could sleep in that. The one pictured looks like it's open to the cab? Is it a cab extension with emergency exit? Or a walk-in tool box? Surely not completely useless, but not for sleeping. Cup of tea? Game of cards? Quick business transaction?

    Air quotes "sleeping".

When I lived in Texas, it was really popular for the 'jocknecks', or 'ropers' as we called them, to pull their high school hunnies up off in he back of the truck during lunch break or whatever, and boink in the back.

I always thought those little camper things were for guys who wanted to sleep in the bed (looks cramped) or for extra seats that were kind of connected to the cab still, and still allowed you to pull a gooseneck trailer.

Disappointed I didn't think of this first. Although I'm sure it's maybe hell on the fiberglass?

This is pretty standard cap removal practice. Lift by the roof rack. Some have a winch or manual pulley and rope system mounted in their garage ceilings.

I was considering contacting the company themselves to see if they endorse that method. It's the easiest method, that's for sure. But I'm not confident those 8 bolts and little metal plates are enough to spare the fiberglass either. I'd definitely be ok with it for something like lifting the topper for a few hours for a reseal, or to work on the rear window of the truck cab or something. I'm less sure about actually storing the topper that way.

I need a better seal for the topper-to-bed rails on my truck and will need to do it before winter. Starting to brainstorm ideas in case I can't find a convenient helper.

All my toppers have had roof racks and I have always used them to remove and install toppers without any problems.

Yes. I have this on the way. Although I guess it's triple-bubble. Not sure what the third bubble is for but the reviews are good. Will see...It wasn't cheap.

I also recently learned my 3rd brake light is leaking into the bed so I need to fix that.

One issue we have to consider when placing topper gaskets is those big stake pocket holes (which no one uses) on the bed rails. Part of the gasket must be outboard or rain will enter and get your stuff wet.

Definitely. Although there are some who use them. It's what people use to build higher side walls to fit a true cord of wood, right?

But yeah, I'm sure I'll never use them.
