5,000 miles ago when I last changed the oil the oem (plastic) oil filter housing fell off my workbench and onto the floor. I reused it at the time but ordered a replacement in case the integrity of the housing was damaged.

When I called a local Toyota parts dept to ask for the p/n of the replacement OEM Tundra housing I was given 15650-0S010, which I ordered. (Original posted updated as I inadvertently referenced the part number for the commonly used metal housing).

This part looks the same as what was on the truck, same length center tube length (even came with a filter pre-installed). Only difference is that it had this small metal clip on the outside of the housing, possibly to help lock it in place in certain applications?

Well this clip prevented the entire housing from installing back onto the truck. I was able to remove it without much effort, and installed the new oil filter housing. I'm hoping someone can verify that I installed the correct oil filter housing since the original didn't have this metal clip on it? I guess worst case something might be different with the bypass valve or something in this one, but I'm hoping it's just an updated part number for other vehicle applications.

Also, I (roughly) measured the amount of oil drained. It came up shy of 8qt. Probably 7.5 or something. This counts what came out of the filter housing. I always fill with 8.5qts (fill with 8, start the engine, let oil pressure come up, stop engine, check dip stick, usually low-ish, add .5qts, start engine, stop, check dip stick, and oil is right in the middle between the dots). I assume no cause for concern here? No issues with the truck otherwise, and no leaks that I've ever seen.

With that part number that you ordered, did it arrive as the black plastic housing or the aluminum one?

Interesting......that part number should have been the aluminum one.

Same thing happened to me, you got the one for engines w/o oil cooler.

    15620-0S010

that’s the one for our engine with an oil cooler.

Hang on, I may have pasted the wrong part from my notes.

The question still remains about that little metal clip though…..

CORRECTION: part number ordered based on the parts dept guidance was: 15650-0S010

It still came with a retaining clip as mentioned. Also like this (little metal clip just below the threads):

Will it not work or is it just that metal clip that is the difference?

On the Toyota parts fiche, 15650 looks like the filter housing with the filter and some other bits. 15620 looks like just the housing (which is all I needed, but maybe the correct sub part of the 15650 part?).

Once the clipped was removed it seemed to work.

The only visual difference I can see is that 15620 doesn’t have the clip as the clip is on the oil cooler.

Agreed, was able to make it work once removing the clip. Just making sure all filter functions (bypass, etc) are all the same.

The bypass is what troubled me so I ordered the correct one and just put the old back for now.

Both parts 15650 and 15620 are listed as components of my 2021 when entering the VIN.
