Agreed, the move to the great white north is highly advisable

Yes, the Cali Costs are real. Btw, I’m a 57 yo Grandpa and as I mentioned zero accidents/tickets in at least 10/15 years. So that $2001 is a big bite.

Idaho or Montana looking better every day. But the wife? Leaving Grandkids? Not a Chance! So I continue to take in the shorts….

I am paying $9000 for 4 cars, 2 adults, 2 teens. Fucking INSANE. I used to pay $6000 but at renewal in July they jacked it up at 9K. My BMW is with Hagerty for $1200/year and $85K replacement value.

We pay around $4k a year for my 2014 Tundra and the wife's 2024 BMW X1 in Dallas.

She had a hit and run claim last year on her XT5, and I had a $6K claim in 2021 for cat theft on my truck.
Homeowners runs almost $4K as well..

CA attorney here that deals with insurance companies daily... Cost of coverage has a lot of variables... bodily injury liability limits, uninsured/underinsured limits, property damage coverage limits, med pay limits, rental coverage, tow coverage, comp/collision, etc. Also depends on company... Paying $2k a year is not unusual, but if you have minimal limits it is too much. On the other hand, if you are carrying $1,000,000 liability coverage, no it is not too much. Also depends if you have a bundle with your home policy, and other potential discounts (AAA, AARP, Costco, etc.) Shopping around and comparing policies (like for like apples to apples) is a good idea every year or at least every couple years. People stay loyal to insurance companies, when the s*** hits the fan you will quickly learn how disloyal they are.

Even with an umbrella policy or a 1 million liability policy, if you read the fine print, they cover virtually nothing... almost nothing! There's one page of print describing what they might* cover and 9 pages describing what they absolutely won't cover. It's a damned joke and probably a scam.

Do an LLC in MT. Problem solved.

Better yet, have you talked with your wife and what you would like to do?

I did the same thing with my wife. She has a timeline and after that I'm leaving with or without her.

First let me say, “Thank You” to this community. Such great insight on not just this topic but so many others I have read. Cheers

I have AAA and bundle it with home also. We don’t have a million dollar policy. The only thing is we do have a $250 deductible. But, to go with the $500 was only $5 less in my coverage. My current policy for my Lexus IS350C is around $740 a year and that’s for a hard top convertible! It just seems, like everything else in CA, price creep. This is, however, a price jump!

If you don’t mind me asking? What type of law do you practice?

The LLC might be the ticket. I will start to research it. Ty!

My wife and I talk daily about CA crime, traffic, homeless, state deficit as we see it daily. You can’t unsee it and we don’t live in a big city. It’s the suburbs and the criminals are participating in “crime tourism” here now. She works for a school district and needs several years before full retirement. So, I keep preaching to the kids. Showing my wife spots to relo to. Fingers crossed. But To try and get 4 sons (one already moved to TX), to move to the same local area is a tough ask. I love my grand babies too. I am also all of their unofficial baseball coaches. :)

I was born and raised here and remember what a beautiful state it use to be. We are long gone from that now and unlikely ever going back. It not just the cost of waking up everyday and eating. It’s the cost of doing anything AND the crime. My wife no longer go grocery shopping when the sun goes down without me. Thats “California Dreamin’” for ya…

Can one have a Texas drivers license with an address in Montana?

    @JohnWhicker

In some states LLCs are fairly easy and inexpensive to set up; one would then register their vehicles to the business or 'LLC' in a more tax/expense friendly state to avoid expenses related to insurance, registration, etc. in their current state of residence.

Most states have laws (MV code) that require you to register/insure your vehicle within your current/primary state of residence. However, when the vehicles are registered to a business rather than an individual LEOs will generally ignore the registration discrepancies.

This is why he suggested LLC... as businesses can be conveniently based 'anywhere' w/o too much scrutiny. This would allow you to have a DL in the state of residence while maintaining registration, etc. out of the location of the LLC.... or at least that would be the plan :spy:

    ok

but Texas lawyers are going to chase the driver for liability

I’m scratching my trying to figure out what the savings is?

I think we are saying insurance is cheaper in Montana?

I think this would work right up to the first accident. And Montana would drop you

I don't love insurance companies... They are all about protecting their money while raking in the premiums.

I lived in CA (mid 90's) Very sad to see it come to this. We still have family out there but I don't step foot in CA if I don't have to.

This may answer questions on the “how insurance works.”

    Insurance Recommendations
You’ll have to get your vehicle insured for road use before you can drive it, but we won’t need proof to register it. To insure your vehicle, you’ll want a policy from your state, and you will simply add the LLC as an additional interest for no extra cost.
