As a career restaurant employee this couldn't be more true.

 

I worked in a Mexican restaurant in high school, and then a commercial food service tech for about 15 years, in and out of all kinds of restaurants in the back of the house. I love movies like “waiting” and a lesser known “slammin salmon”(made by the super trooper guys)

Honestly, with her job providing benefits I bet you could get an hourly job and if you cranked OT you would make more than lots of salary jobs.

I H.A.T.E.D. red light cameras when we had them. Cam clocked me at 10 miles per hour making a right turn - problem was that I'd already stopped at the light. Enough complaints happened that Texas outlawed them in 2019. Municipalities are prohibited from using them. My town loooooved them, and I bet they'd invested millions before the law shut them down.

 

"Buying your time" I understand but the overtime thing does not compute with me.

 

Utah outlawed robocop the radar wagon that sent you speeding tickets. I saw it but too late, so I ducked down on the bench seat of my old suburban. They sent a ticket with the picture that clocked the truck at 15 over - but no driver. I said, how could that be the truck was parked?

 

That paired with Windy is a solid combo.

 

They are buying your time, but you are out of stock after 40 hours in most jobs. If they want more then they are buying your personal time, and they pay more. Unless you are very good at walking away from projects/tasks or desperately love your job and find fulfillment in it, salary is generally a trap when comparing hours worked to pay earned.

I use my OT rate to determine what my time is worth for all kinds of stuff. If a business is wasting my time and then wants to make it right, the compensation needs to be at a value equal the amount of my personal time they wasted. Almost none will do it.

 

I understand. My point was that it does not compute because as the business owner there is no overtime.

 

That depends on the salary and what amount of additional time you spend working. But your argument is valid for many. Bonuses as part of a comp package carry the same pluses and minuses.

 

Maybe. Some independent tradesmen charge more for after-hours or weekends. That equates to overtime, no?

 

You are correct - but it is not me.

 

As the business owner you can restructure your pay to an hourly rate if you want to, and then you legally have to pay OT to yourself. It's free money! (doing politician math for that one)

I guess it combines all the user weather stations + NOAA to give projections.
