I towed with 34s, 35s and now 37s and yes gears would help but it didn’t change much from 35s to 37s so not a priority. Eventually yes but for now I’m happy. Tows just fine for my need.

Yeah, no. Flat here too and I was not gonna ride around on those 4.30s with 37s.

All joking aside, have you driven a Tundra with 34, 35, or 37 inch tires that HAS been regeared? Not trying to bust your balls, just curious because 37’s on stock gears is generally considered reeeaaaalllllyyyyy tall.

I’d be willing to bet that the vast majority of Tundras on the the road with 35” tires are still rolling stock gears, think it’s just dandy, and don’t realize the difference or improvement that they make because they simply haven’t experienced it.

I work with two boners that have a ‘10 and an ‘18. Both on 34-35” tires. Both stock gears. Both think it’s just fine and no trouble. I should let them drive mine for a bit…. Be a good way to spend a few grand of their money!

Oh I’m sure if I drove one with 5.29s on 37s I’d be in love. I haven’t had any issues with mine but like I said gears are in the future but not priority.

I drove 35s on stock gears and it didn't bother me but the minute I tried 37s, I hated my truck. Regearing was a moral imperative at that point.

    Update on this post.

Just finished a 180 miles towing 3500lbs. Previously I’d get 90 miles to half a tank but I’m at 180 at half a tank. Towing in 6th at 70+ is not an issue.

I changed the fluid at 300 miles and it looked great and there was very little sludge on the magnet. I then did the next 180 miles with the trailer. Drained the fluid tonight and it was a waste of money as it was spotless and zero sludge on the magnet but peace of mind was worth it. 4 qts of fresh Lucas 75w90 and I’m laying the hammer down with the trailer and setting the cruise.

Anyone on the fence of gears, just do it. This is the 4th vehicle I’ve geared and by far the biggest improvement of any of them. Even more than the jump to 4.88 from 3.55 in my k5 on 37’s.

Yeah, I drove 4 hours to my Dad's and it's the first long trip I've done with the 5.29s and 37s. I drove 80-83 mph the majority of the way and didn't even burn 3/4 tank of gas.

It’s pretty much the best thing ever for Tundras. Pretty impressive that we get better economy when towing with the lower gears. Honestly, I didn’t see an improvement there till I tuned my transmission. That bumped my trailer towing mileage up 20% after getting the damn thing to shift how more efficiently.

Just hand calculated. 9.4mpg. Almost two full mpg gain at higher speeds than before.

What's the ballpark cost for an upgrade to 5.29 gears and the limited slip rear?

I think I saw the OTT tune at like $500.

Add a touch more if Powertrax hasn't fixed their machining and the axle splines need to be clearanced. I think I was right around 5500-6000 after taxes for everything (Nitro 5.29s, install kits, Powertrax, installation and machining of the axle splines) at one of the most reputable gearing shops in MA. The group buy or offsite/remote gear install/setup would have been a much more frugal way to go about it, but sometimes paying the premium and letting someone else be responsible for the entire effort is worth it.

I either received my Powertrax after they fixed it, or before they screwed it up. My shafts went right in.

when I had mine done, MSRP on parts was about $2,200 plus oil. I paid cost on gears through a buddy’s shop, and found the Grip Pro on Amazon, of all places, for under $600. Guessing an algorithm told them to dump price when they weren’t selling, because price shot up the next day.

I paid $1,600 at Keizer Brake in Eugene, OR. They’re the local gear gurus. Been real happy ever since.

Thanks for the responses. It seems like a massive cost for the upgrade. I can't imagine there would be a 6k savings in fuel. Performance must be fantastic. I'll have to keep it in mind. I just got the truck 2 months ago, 60k miles. I have a lot to do... I'll add to the list.

Only really necessary if you plan to run 35"-37" rubber or bigger. Btw, if you choose to re-gear to 4.88 (for 35s) the cost is the same so most just do the 5.29s

I have the equivalent of 34.8" tires I think. I wouldn't go bigger, but maybe more narrow. It already had that setup on it when I bought it.

I wouldn't limit a regear to only a tire size. Use cases and terrain are a big factor, too. I have "tall" 33s on 5.29s and don't regret it at all, but it's a tow pig and I didn't like having to use 3rd gear on some of the mountain climbs. The regear put me perfectly within the power band at my typically towing speeds in 4th with a locked TC.

100% accurate. 4th gear at 60mph puts me right at 3,000 rpm with my 34.8” tall 285/75-18 tires. After my tune was completed, the dunk shows my peak torque at 2,900 rpm. Perfect…
