    First post here:

First of all, replacing this alternator was a pain in the ass, but if you have some mechanical ability and some patience, you can do it. I also followed a youtube video and it was a great help, even though the mechanic in the video made it look too easy and was obviously dealing with a newer truck with less rust. I'll put the link in this post as well.

    This is where I'm stuck.

I removed the old alternator, and these two bushings (spacers?) are stuck in the old alternator. I can't find any reference to them on google. Even the parts diagram (link below) on a Toyota parts website has no reference to this.

Do I really need them? I'm thinking the 4 bolts holding this to the engine block should suffice, right?

My next thought is taking an angle grinder to the old alternator to get them out, but I was hoping to rebuild this alternator. Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like in the video you posted, they easily feel out for him and he did say to make sure you put them back on the block.

Maybe hit em with some oil n let em sit for a while. :monocle:

They're alignment/shear sleeves. If they're impossible to get out I frankly wouldn't sweat it and I highly doubt you'll have any issues with just the bolts.

    Many on the way.
Those dowel pins are part number 90253-13017, two required. They can be found in the timing cover diagram.

Just tap them down with a hammer, they should just slide in.
That YT video is for a 4.6 is it? Does anyone know - are the alternators in the same location for each engine?
    4.6 and 5.7 the same?

The 4.6 is the same as the 5.7, just has a shorter deck height.

There’s a shoulder at the bottom of the dowel bore in the alternator, so while not impossible, getting behind the lip of the dowel might be more of hassle than it’s worth. Toyota uses this part everywhere on dozen of models, so it should be readily available, and at $4 or $5, install new.

Mine were froze in. The steel bushings chemicaly weld themselves to the aluminum ears in the housing.

I ended up cutting mine out with a portable band saw. It destroys the used alternator as a core, but I didn't care.

You are correct. The replacement job is a real pain. Took me 5 hours.

That's a good video, I like a guy who just does the work. Lays out all the tricks and torques specs. 5 Stars!

Yeah, no doubt. Made it look a little easier than it actually was.

This is what I ended up doing. Without the sleeves there was a very minimal amount of play. I picked the middle of the movement and tightened it in there.

Thats what we had to resort to on my buddies 2009, foul language, hammers, penetrating fluid, a torch and a press were doing nothing. A sawzall blade and ta daa, came right off. We smeared the ever loving bejesus out of them with anti seize. I agree, alternator replacement on these things is a nightmare compared to any other truck/SUV I've done.

Well, no dice. Belt is shifting on the alternator so it is likely out of alignment. I'll use the part numbers listed above and see if I can get it right. :(

Well, I hope you're right. I ordered two. Belt shifted forward on the alternator pulley so I guess you need these.
