Just for funsies, I’d pick up that stack of washers and shuffle them like a deck of cards.

But, yes. You hit the nail on the head. They’re gears. They set up like gears. A good gear guy can do it. They may need to order some shims though…

These are old USA prices. They are dirt cheap out of Japan… like $2.92 for the for the $15 pieces, down to .95 for the $2.17 shims.

That’s awesome. Dumb question, how does one go about ordering these parts from Japan?

Well they have arrived. They came in different boxes with the fronts looking much more legit Motive and the rears looking more like generic black boxes. I suppose this doesn’t mean anything. I pretty much decided they were legit when seeing they were shipping from Midwest truck parts. More importantly both rings and pinions have identical numbers for what I presume to be batch numbers, manufacture date of 07/18 which could convey this is old stock, and 37/7 for the tooth count and T10.5-529 and T9-529.

My guess is they’re selling off what is now 6 year old stock. Clearly the motive brand doesn’t sell much stock for tundra gears for whatever reason, otherwise this thread wouldn’t exist in the context of questioning their quality as this knowledge would already have been established.

While not listed on their site, I called and got a quote last winter and they do assemble and ship out built front diff/ rear third members for our 2nd gen’s.

I talked to Brandon and he was super helpful and nice. After shipping back your cores, i was quoted approx $2600 for both diffs. But then you would need to R&R yourself or find someone local to swap them in.

Received my gears as well and it’s the same story as @Silver17 one nice box, one not so nice box, but all the part number match up, so it looks good to me. Hopefully I can keep chipping away at parts and get these installed before too long

Nice. What’s the manufacture date on yours? It will be awhile til I get mine installed. If I’m lucky it will be before summer. Keep me in mind if you find a nice deal on install kits and I’ll do the same!

I’ll check the manufacture date in the morning, but the best value I’ve found for bearings are still the master install kits from ECGS. I signed up for their mailing list so I’ll keep you posted of any sales I get notified of!

My 4.88's also showed up. Look like the same vintage as @Silver17. They also both have a hand etched '93' in both the pinion and gear set, so somebody has had hands on them in the QC department. Hopefully... Now to find some front 4.88 gears...

I think I have compiled a list of most of the OEM part numbers for bearings and seals in case somebody decides to build the diffs themselves. Perhaps somebody such as @Jowett can double check and fill in any missing parts like the front pinion seal. I honestly don't remember whether or not the rear differential uses a solid pinion sleeve instead of a crush sleeve, but I didn't include it. The front parts include a crush sleeve. Neither includes shims as I think those are typically ordered per each from Toyota, or a a shim kit from the likes of Nitro.

Online Toyota dealers comes out to about $770 without tax. Guess I'll have to see what it looks like with 25% on Monday (supposed to be $525). I might just jump on that.

    Rear Differential

    90311-A0008 Pinion seal

    90366-A0017 Pinion bearing Front

    90366-A0023 Pinion bearing rear

90366-A0020 Side Ring bearing QTY 2 RQD

    Front Differential

    90311-47027 Side Axle Seal

    90363-35063 Pinion Bearing

    90366-40114 Pinion Bearing

90366-58013 Carrier Bearing QTY 2 RQD

    41231-34040 Crush Sleeve

    Many on the way.
Here is my list, which does include more parts. The rear pinion nut and rear ring gear bolts are not included here, they are not available through Japanese suppliers. The rear diff uses a solid spacer, so no crush sleeve.

The 37/7 isn't the batch number - it's the gear ratio. Number of ring gear teeth divided by number of pinion gear teeth. 37/7 = 5.2857 or 5.29 gears. If you look at my pic above, it's 39/8 = 4.875 or 4.88 gears. You should be able to verify that your gears are indeed 5.29's by counting the number of teeth on each part.

It appears that laser numbering is MFG part number, blank part or batch number, manufacture date, and tooth count. You'll notice that the second number is the only common number between 5.29 and 4.88 gears, which leads me to believe that the ring gears blanks were all the same part number or batch number, then machined in to the finish product with the appropriate number of teeth. That make sense to me; if I were running a CNC setup, the second number would be a reference number for the machine to recognize initial blank dimensions before doing any machine work. I'm guessing the hand engraved number is QC verifying that the laser etched info matches the machining that actually took place by simply counting the number of teeth on each (and hopefully some other QC checks).

Sweet! Now I guess I need to figure out how to order stuff from Japan..

The rears are up to $308 and the fronts are still $56. Considering the regular price for either just the rear or just the front is typically $450 it’s still a pretty solid deal.

Found these Nitro 4.88's for $300. I got the Nitro rear 4.88's a year ago when they were $100 and tempted to pick these up. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/...BSPdjuBhLp6ofg3TDFLcZ0qUq8eK59mlsdbOiAPW1nE30

Hmmm, stick with the 4.88 or try for the 5.29? Don't plan on going to 37's so was thinking 4.88. Crazy the gears are so cheap, but install kits are $$$.

Wow. $183 for the set. Hmmm. I haven't installed gears in years.
