1st Gen for DD in 2024?

We are looking to get out of a newer car we have and get something bigger for our growing family. I am looking at Sequoia’s because of the room they offer. I had a 2016 tundra years ago and loved it and I’m just looking for some advice on the idea of getting a first GEN Sequoia for a daily driver family car that would be a long-term vehicle.

I found a 2004 with 78k miles. Rust free, 2 owner.

looks new. Would this be a good idea or should I be eyeing a 2nd gen with 100-115k miles ?

 

I LOVE my first generation Sequoia. I have a 2001 with over 300k. Every bulb in the truck is original. It’s crazy. Everything works except the rear window which I disabled. Absolutely amazing longevity. Cons- exhaust manifolds like to leak. They have shitty brakes but I upgraded mine to a larger size. They had a few manufacturers making compressors for the AC and two had issues but with 78k, if the AC works you’ll be good. I’d snap that first generation up in a second.

 

Love my first gens. 06 with 240k, runs and drives amazing, everything works. Has all the options I'd want, nothing I don't. I prefer the later models 05+ with the 5 spd trans, but would definitely take an earlier one too. Really love the 4wd system (compared to tundra).

2nd gens are obviously a little bigger and more power. Gas mileage sucks on both. Think they are both equally reliable. Personally I like the looks of first gens more. The size is perfect for our family (both tundra and sequoia). 1st gens are going to be cheaper to buy and therefore cheaper to insure, if that's a consideration.

Please share the purchase price if you would, as I'll be in the market for another first gen to add to my stable as my kids are nearing driving age.

 

If the price is right, I’d buy it. But if you’re not handy with auto maintenance and repairs, you’ll be paying shop labor for all the age related repairs and end up spending way more than you planned.

 

I’m pretty handy on a vehicle.

The one in Florida turns out to have some rust, I can see the frame has been painted over in the pictures. Not worth me chancing it.

I have located another up north in Massachusetts, no rust, some how.

1 owner, 71k miles. $18,000

the price is high but I’m going to try and grab this one. Fly up and make the 12 hour drive home. I’m willing to pay more for a 1 owner that’s almost new like this one

 

Maybe see if you can get a pre purchase inspection, 3rd party? That’s what I did before I flew to The Cali to buy our 4r

 

Color me skeptical on a rust free truck from Massachusetts

Agree 100%. Three years ago, the wife and I flew to Scottsdale Arizona to buy a Tundra. All the pics the owner sent weren’t even the same truck I spent my time and money on to go see. It was a pile of shit. Lesson learned and won’t do it again. Get it inspected first. If the guy wants to sell it, he’ll agree to that.
