Caught a rock while driving a few days agos and now have a crack in the windshield. I am going to try for repair, but assuming I need to replace the entire windshield, does anyone have any recommendations for a vendor? My dealer doesn't do glass work - they sub it out to a shop three counties away. I will take it there if I don't find another good option. I have had bad expereince with Safelite on other vehicles.

Also, has anyone had a problem with theri insurance paying for the OEM replacement? As I recall, this glass is acoustic and I want the Toyota part. The truck is only 9 months old.

    Thanks in advance.

Where are you? I know a good place in the North Dallas area, but that might not help.

Did dealer replace it, or another vendor?

I used a shop that the dealer uses, dealership said they don't do windshield replacement.

Ask a dealers what shop they use and do it through that shop directly. They know how to make it clean and even avoid the recalibration portion.

yeah, got that referral from dealer but the shop is three counties away (1 hr drive). But there is another delar here in town so I will check with them - maybe they use a vendor that closer. thanks.

1h away may be worth, 1. the savings and 2. they know what they're doing so you avoid the residual pain when if screw up the job. A fellow here in Houston is going exactly through that pain right now.

The local shop that I use will only use OEM glass if there are windshield mounted sensors, and my insurance (Geico) has had zero issues with paying for it.

I'd say the only way to know if insurance will cover it is to call your insurance. Like you say the LE has the acoustic glass and you want to make sure whoever is replacing it is using the correct glass and not just charging you for it. I know a few years back I had the glass crack on my 08 and my insurance didn't cover it, turns out I just didn't have coverage for it.

Most insurance companies don't cover OEM glass which is more expensive. For my Honda I had to call and fight for it.

I'd drive it until you can guarantee you are getting the same glass. I drove around for 3 years in my Tacoma, happened around 3k and I was pissed, so I feel your pain. In fact, I've only have my tundra about 2 1/2 weeks and last week a big ol' rock hit and chipped my door and bedside. So super pissed lol.

I about ready to get my 4th windshield. I do not have the acoustic glass or whatever, but up until recently, OEM was the only thing available. My glass guy told me the last windshield I got would be the last Toyota one. Insurance requires them to provide the lowest cost available at the time of installation. I am fortunate to know this glass guy as he used to be an employee of mine.

You definitely want to ask some questions to make sure they are doing it right.

    • Here is the route that worked for me. Tell insurance company that you will not take anything else but OEM, and you will provide them with cheaper possible cost of replacement, other than the dealer and still OEM.
    • Call your friendly dealerships and find out which 3rd party they use to install their glass, they all outsource it. Granted you have a good relationship with them. Else find through other sources a glass shop that serves dealerships.
    • After you secure that 3rd party shop phone number, call them, arrange with them to buy the OEM from the dealership parts department and make sure they get the 3rd party discount. The shop can usually buy the parts for 20-40% less than what they sell to you directly. Ask me how I know. Negotiate the labor, around $200 most and ask them to skip the calibration which is around $400-600. They know how to do that very elegantly.
    • Get the final number and quotes, submit these to the insurance company and I guarantee you they will approve it. As soon you get the green light, get the 3rd party shop to proceed.
    • And stay away from Safelite and all the other cheap options. You truck deserves better.
I did this on my Honda Trailsport 2024 and my 2013 Tundra and it worked perfect.

I just did mine also, safelite and it is not OEM glass. I’ve replaced a lot of windshield in my time and never had an issue with non-oem glass. USAA believe it or not you’ll have to fight or you cover the difference. I have had no issues with sensors.

As I understand, you can add OEM parts option to your insurance. It's cost just a little bit more.

My Farmers personal had Oem parts coverage and paid $3k to dealership for mbz glass replacement. However my Farmers businesses insurance doesn't offer oem parts at all... So that would be a fight.

So call your insurance and see if you can add Oem parts option to your policy

update...found a local shop referred by Toyota of Orlando. They are checking with my insurance (Progressive), but expect that OEM windshield will be covered. Windshield is backordered 10-15 days. I'm fine waiting provided that i'm getting OEM and my insurance pays. Will update later. Thanks for everyone's input.

The first time they did it, the second time he had it dialed in and didn’t have to do it. For the sensors.

I'm being told (in Texas) by multiple vendors that the recalibration is required by DOT for safety reasons.

Replaced mine at 4000mi. Rock hit and that was it. Replaced with OEM glass and insurance paid all $1700 no questions asked. They were pushing Safelight and I told them I wanted it done by my dealer and they gave me no problem. Insurance company actually emailed a statement to the effect due to the safety system it is recommended to be replaced and recalibrated to factory spec! Install went great and totally satisfied
