For me the main appeal is negating the need to drive for x amount of time at x speed, stop and cool down, and keep repeating the heating/cooling cycles for the rear gears, let alone creating the same perfect break in scenario acceptable for the front gears in 4x4 all while having very little free time so as it is with little ones (soon to be 2 of them). Being polished I can take a more lax approach to the break in from the heat cycle perspective just because they won’t get nearly as hot. I’ll probably still do a fluid change, but the whole process just feels a whole lot more optional with polishing. If I were a single dude or a guy with grown kids and more free time, the time needed to dedicate to a proper break in procedure wouldn’t be a big deal.

Good point. Time is valuable. It was easy for me, as the gear shop is 15 miles from my office, which got them warm once. Let them cool for several hours before my 19 mile drive home. Cool overnight. Drive to work. Cool all day. You get the picture.
I have lots of logging roads near my home, so I just went for a 4x4 rally a couple times on a couple Saturday and Sunday mornings before we were all up and going. I admit that it’s easy for me to have some free time in the mornings. Wife and the kiddos (only one left at home now) sure do like to sleep in on the weekends. I’m m up with the chickens, so may as well get something done!

I think we sweet talk all our mods after we install them. I did after the rear gears were in at each stage of driving.:p

I’d have an easier time if I daily drove the truck to work. I have a company work truck though, so I rarely drive the truck. I’d be stuck in a perpetual break in cycle for 2-3 months, and I’d struggle to not tow or drive hard in that time frame!

This was a good read too! I wonder which manufacturers, if any, use lapping. Seems like a less intensive quick method to give some of the benefits of polishing, at a lower cost.

Now the question is does anyone have a full list of all the components I need to start to gather up?

    • F/R gears from Motive
    • F/R master install kits from Yukon (still waiting on front kit)
    • Speedmaster limited slip

There were a few others I recall reading here and I think more of the info was on either IH8MUD or one of the Tacoma sites. Regardless, I think the dead horse says neither is right or wrong.

Most important question of this thread: do we think AI generated art for "lapping" gears includes vanilla and glitter?

Just got my speedmaster delivered today, are you guys who aren’t doing a regear just pulling bearings and reusing them? I have 41k miles on mine and I don’t feel the need to replace them.

I reused mine when I did the Auburn. I did replace them when I re-geared but they still looked great. You should be good to go. Just swap everything. Make sure you keep the shims with perspective side. Do a pattern check and backlash. If you have inch pound torque wrench check pinion preload. Some do some dont on used bearings. Hopefully you won't have to touch anything.

Why we so worried about gear break-in lol im sure many of us have bought new cars fresh off the lot and not thought about this lol

glad the speed masters are working out. Ill probably do the full spool to have less to worry about

Those gears are ready to go. The tooling for their gears probably have million$$ invested. I don't think Motive does...aren't most aftermarket gears like 90% finished and we get to do the final touch.

In my opinion, it is very important to verify the pinion bearing preload. This is exactly why we have crush sleeves or solid spacers with shims. And, a clicky type torque wrench isn’t the correct tool for this. You need either a dial or a beam torque wrench so you can see the preload as you slowly turn the pinion.

And remember, the seal adds preload. I believe the spec is without seal. Could be wrong though.

It could add a minute amount but mostly its carrier and pinion preload. You have to press in/out several times and don't want to destroy the new seal.
You have preload from the carrier bearing shims which is not known and your pinion preload from the non crushable spacer and 2 shims with it for rear and crushable in front. You subtract your final preload from your previous backlash check preload to get each one.

I spoke with Ken, Zuk, yesterday where he was really advocating getting the Motive gears REM'd or any gear. I called him as I developed a whine at 57-62mph and on deceleration, 1k miles on gears. I was in email contact with him during my setup and sent pics of my patterns etc. I've worked on Dana 44's and 60's on my old wagoneer and ship's reduction gears. Ken said he's seen it where the ring can get just a little hot or have a high spot that sends out the harmonic whine. Why he advocates for polishing or shot peening and properly set gears should not whine...
It's not a big issue but I saw on new England gear polishing that they can REM polish a used set to remove the old pattern. So I'll be sending them in to give it another go.

He said he has good luck with Revolution gears and to call them for their super polishing as it's not on their website. Or use one of the REM shops for whatever gears you got. Weddle in CA has 6 weeks lead time and NE Gear polishing is 7-10 days. He said he has been striving to get the gears dead on to not have any issues. I thanked him for passing on his knowledge on his website/email and talking. A super guy who knows his stuff.

Please disregard my previous deleted comment… it was crude, and a little “tongue in cheek” you might say..
