    A340E/F INFO DUMP
While the above is a true and accurate statement, if you do find yourself in need and are searching used units, not all configurations of the A340 transmission are the same. These are things I learned in the process of finding a unit for my truck that may help someone later on.

This thread will serve for information related to the AISIN A340E/F 4sp transmissions found in our 2000-2004 3.4 (5VZ-FE) V6 and 2000-2004 non-VVTi 4.7 (2UZ-FE) V8 engine First Gen Tundras.

    Transmission Info

The A340 (A340E, A340F, A340H) and the AW4 are sister transmissions. The AW4 is commonly found in Jeeps, such as 1987-2001 Cherokees.

The A340E, A340F, A340H transmission is found in Toyota cars, trucks and SUVs and a few Mitsubishis, Kias, Lexus cars and SUVs, and Volvos.

    Applications

Some models of these vehicles have an A340 transmission:
    • 1992 to 2010 Toyota 4Runner
    • 1992 to 1998 Toyota Supra L6 3.0L without Turbo
    • 1993 to 1998 Toyota Supra L3 3.0L with Turbo
    • 1993 to 1998 Toyota T100
    • 1995 to 2017 Toyota Tacoma
    • 2000 to 2004 Toyota Tundra
    • Some 1990 to 2005 Kia, Lexus, Mitsubishi and Volvo
Some international vehicles, such as Soarer

    Transmission Info Continued

The A340 was offered in 3 different casings (depending on year and application). For the sake of this thread, our trucks (at least mine being a 00) have/has 4 valve passages evidenced on the left side of the transmission assembly. Older A340s have 3 and newer A340s have 4 with no provision for the kickdown cable. This information will pertain to the style of valve body that it is able to accept. Only casings of the same style will accept the same style valve body. See pic below

    upload_2024-12-6_10-23-21.png

    Pans

There are 9 different stock pans. These 9 stock pans have 4 different depths and 7 different dipstick receiver heights and angles. There are 13 different filters and 15 different valve bodies.

Here is an image showing at least 3 different pan styles

    upload_2024-12-6_10-23-37.png

I have also read that some vehicles equipped with an external trans cooler will come factory with a shorter pan. This could give you an option later on to swap to a deeper pan for larger capacity and better cooling purposes. It’s a popular mod with the MKIII Supra owners to swap the pan for one from a GS300 with no further modifications needed other than adjusting for the extra fluid.

Below is a deep pan from an A340 w/o external cooler

    upload_2024-12-6_10-23-52.png

Below is shallow pan from an A340 with factory external trans cooler

    upload_2024-12-6_10-24-7.png

    Back to FGT A340E/F Info

For the sake of our trucks, there are 2 different bellhousings and the block you have will determine the bell housing you have. V8s will be stamped on top with UZ and V6s will be stamped with VZ. See pic below.

    upload_2024-12-6_10-24-31.png

There are also 2 different tail shafts available depending on your drivetrain. The skinny tail shaft is for 2WD trucks, while the fatter, more flared out tail shaft will accommodate bolting up to a transfer case and is for 4WD trucks. (This should be common sense, but I figure the more info, the better)

The “E” in A340E indicates that it is a 2WD trans and the “F” in A340F indicated that it is a 4WD trans. This info can also be found on the trucks VIN plate as 2WD trucks will be stamped VCK30 and 4WD trucks stamped VCK40.

It is possible to convert a 2WD trans to a 4WD capable trans by swapping the tail shaft, valve body and trans pans, but I will not cover that here. It is also possible to swap the bellhousings, pans and valve bodies from a VZ truck to a UZ truck and visa versa. It is also possible to swap bellhousings, tail shafts, pans and valve bodies from other A340 equipped vehicles provided there share the same casings.

    Other A340 Related Info

Each A340 will be equipped with a sticker on top of the trans letting you know what series it is and also a corresponding model tag can be found on the right rear of the case half. (See photos below.) Only those that precede with a serial number of 35000 are compatible with our trucks. The second number and the number printed on the sticker will indicate the valve body and trans pan configuration. The correct valve body is necessary in order to properly communicate with the ECM.

    upload_2024-12-6_10-25-0.png

    upload_2024-12-6_10-25-10.png

    Valve Bodies

Lastly, I’ll cover valve body types. As stated earlier, there are 15 different valve bodies available for the A340 transmission depending on year, drive, casing and factory equipment such as tow package, ABS, ect…

Below are a few examples. The most important thing to note is that each style valve body has a different casting ID number (mine is 8931). You MUST use a VB with the same casting ID as what your truck came with when doing a straight swap or else the ECM will be unhappy and at best, you'll throw a DTC for shift solenoid (P0773). This info is not accurate if doing a swap for modification purposes.

Note that pic #3 is the type/style that is in our A340 equipped FGTs

Please feel free to add to or correct any info as you see fit. This will only help aid our knowledge going forward.

Great write up and attention to detail. Now my head is spinning if I should add the larger pan to my Sequoia. I wonder how many quarts it'll add?

I should also note that the A340 has AT LEAST 2 different inhibitor switches available (could be more)

FGT Inhibitor Switch (also know as a neutral safety switch)

    upload_2024-12-6_13-17-55.png

    Donor T4R Inhibitor Switch

    upload_2024-12-6_13-18-44.png

Due to the different harnesses, these are not interchangeable, but are easily swapped from one transmission to another.

This pic here will illustrate the difference in filters. FGT deep pan filter left, T4R shallow pan filter right. I'm not reusing either one of these, btw.

Other various info from the owner's manual that will be redundant to most, but I felt beneficial to at least have it here.

Still kinda jealous of y'all with the 4spd. I guess I should Google around and see if it's possible to add a dipstick to the A750f and have it actually be functional.

Check with PML. They have a deep pan for the A750 and A760 with provisions for a temp sensor. Might be able to adapt that for a dip stick tube(?)

It’s insane what Toyota charges if you need to replace a shift solenoid.

That's probably all manufacturers. I had a mid-90's Pontiac Bonneville SSEi that needed a solenoid replaced. $30 part. ~$800 labor. In 90's dollars.

Haha…sorry, I just meant the part alone was $200 each, IIRC from a member’s last post. Might as well source a fully rebuilt transmission if you want Toyota to do the work.

How does that compare to the work of tearing apart the transmission to replace a solenoid?
