I’m thinking of replacing the stock muffler on my truck to a Flowmaster for a better sound. Nothing offensive but something that sounds better than stock. Maybe a series 50 or one of the 40s like a delta or the original. Problem is that I’ve never heard an aftermarket exhaust on a 3.4L V6, except for on YouTube. Anyone have one of these mufflers installed and can speak to the noise level?

Just make sure to stick to the right size pipes and single exhaust. Should sound decent. Bonus points if you go all out with some Doug Thorley headers.

Tend to agree. If you want your truck to sound like it has a fart can on it, I'd highly encourage it, though.

Scrolling through YouTube videos, all the exhaust videos are on the Tacoma with the 3.6L V6, and with flowmaster 40s, etc. Maybe I have low expectations, but I thought they sounded pretty good. Nothing like a V8 Mustang with the original 40s, but not like a tin can either. Then again, Ive never heard the V6 Toyota with an aftermarket exhaust. I just found it strange that this Tundra group didn't have much on exhausts. That's what prompted me to post this. I know the V6 isn't as popular as the V8, but I've heard the old GM V6s on the Grand Nationals, etc. and they sound pretty nice. Granted those are supercharged, but nice deep and throaty sound in a non-porn way. Lol.

Plus my Tundra has the MT, so a nice exhaust sounds great going through the gears. Just looking for something a little louder than stock with a nice mellow deep sound. Nothing obnoxious. Maybe like a 50 series FM?

Bypass the intake baffles. Make the intake tube nice & smooth, and the v6 has a pretty good roar to it.

I had a 50 series on 4.0 v6 Tacoma. Liked it a lot. Had some growl but not overly loud. Got louder as it aged though. Friend had Flowmaster super 40 on his Tacoma and it was a lot louder than my 50 series. That was 10+ years ago though so who knows what Flowmaster may have changed by now

I would assume 50 should be nice for v6 tundra.

Is the baffle the resonator? Any idea if that would still pass inspection? In NY, the annual inspection includes the emissions test.

How would you compare the 50 to stock in terms of sound tone and loudness? Would hate to go through the trouble of doing the work and it's barely noticable. Definitely not looking to be that guy, but love a nice sounding exhaust.

On my ‘97 4runner there were baffles on the intake tube, i used some plastic lids and a heat gun to shape em to the inside of the intake tube. One of those baffles had a vacuum line, so that lid got a small hole drilled through it, then i put the plugged baffles back on so it looked stock.
    IMG_0112.jpg
(i dont remember if that smallest one was a baffle or just a vacuum line.)

bone stock quieter, but it had a decent roar under load.

there's a number of tacomas and 4RS here that I've heard my fair share. It's meh.....at best. ESPECIALLY if you step on it, it just makes the struggle louder.

Yea if you want louder, it'll do the trick.

I had a flow master 50 series / DeltaFlow on my Chevy 4.3 V6. Great sound at idle. Sounded like a V6 when you got over 1000 RPM. To be fair though, that’s a 350 missing 2 cylinders, not the smaller 3.4 OHC Yoter motor

This is what I ran on my Tacoma with a Jardine single exhaust. Sounded awesome. Anyways this intake tube *should* work for your truck. Might take a little effort if the tundra air box isn't the same distance from the engine as the Tacoma air box, or if the box is different.

You want it sound really good and have some real balls, you really want a supercharger.
TRD Gen 1 or Gen 2, or Magnuson Gen 2 (same thing as the TRD Gen 2) or Magnuson TVS1320.
Magnuson made all the TRD superchargers. Toyota just rebranded them TRD.

My old 3.4 T100 came with a Flowmaster and I thought it sounded pretty decent, dumped behind the axle.
I have no idea what model it was or anything but it didn’t drone, was pretty tame cruising and sounded good when you got on it, maybe a little raspy but no complaints.
Eventually it rusted out and I replaced it with an OE style muffler which was pretty boring and quiet.

Engine work including a supercharger is down the road if at all. I’ll look into the intake pipe a little closer. I’m curious if there’s any real performance gains from it though. Past experience was to stay away from ram air intakes because of sucking in hot air in and better off just sticking with stock, but I’ll look into those kits for this truck.

Never heard of Jardine exhausts but will check them out. Thanks

That Airaid tube used the stock air box. It just replaces the tube. Much like Casey mentioned about removing the baffles on the stock tube.

Describing sound is always subjective to the ear of the beholder...

50 series was subtle. New it was comparable to stock at idle and only slightly more sound than stock cruising but noticeable over about 3000 rpm under load accellerating.

Later, it got deeper and louder as it aged. When I sold the truck years later, it had gotten a nice tone even at idle as well as while accelerating still without being too much at cruising on highway.

Complimented a TRD cold air intake sound nicely. But again, this was a 4.0 Tacoma.

My experience with a 50 on my 4.7 was similar. Started subtle, better tone but not loud. Opened up a bit with more throttle application. Over time, grew louder and grumblier. Then rusted out (after 17 years) and sounded like ass.

I find it unfair the 5vz V6 can make more power than the 2uz V8 on stock internals, makes me think a supercharged 5vz tundy with manual is the holy grail.

It takes a lot of extra goodies to get it there. URD pulleys, URD 7th injector at the very least.
If you really want it to sing, meth+water injection, racing clutch, short throw shifter, 4.30-4.88 gears, Doug Thorley headers into a single exhaust, Airaid modular intake tube, URD thermostat, iridium spark plugs, and the newest/most efficient/most powerful of the Magnuson supercharger choices for the 5vz: the TVS1320. I'm surprised Magnuson didn't make that one intercooled. I wonder if Elate makes a plate that bolts up to it, so an intercooler could be added.

Then there's this guy who twin charged his 4Runner.

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
This is the Best idea to do first - it will gain a minor amount of HPs but will really sound throatier - Toyo put it on to make the Runner more civil back then. Think I have read it eats up 7hp silencing things down. Yeah 7 is a lawnmower but to an engine that only makes a Peak of 183 - it is noticeable (like having the A/C on or not).
