Im making a drive through the mountains tomorrow and plan on putting some weight in my bed for added traction. On other half tons i've done 3 - 400lbs. Should i stick with that for my 05 double cab?

    Everything. Literally.
I think there was another thread on this a few weeks ago.
Personally, I don’t use any with the 4wd on the tundra and I’ve never had a problem, and I live in Colorado. With my 2wd silverado I used 4 60# sand tubes.

I asked this a week or two ago. Overwhelming response was no weight if you have 4 wheel drive. Have driven in some snow since then with no weight in the bed and did fine, however not in the mountains. Just please tie down anything you put in there, as it will become a projectile if you have an accident.

I have 4 60lbs bags of sand. Probably should have them tied down. Noticed some improvement interaction on snow. Next year I plan on having a canopy and new tires. LTX tries have surprisingly good traction in wet and dry snow. Pisses me off to since I have no excuse to tell my wife we need new tires:cool:

Where you headed? Just use 4wd when you need to, you’ll be fine. How’s your tires?
Let’s say If the road was covered in snow for 1200+Kim’s and you had it in 4wd all the way, won’t hurt it.
Depending on how roads are just use it as needed.

I drove from Grande Prairie to Vancouver. Just got back last night. There were some pretty nasty sections from GP to Grande Cache on the way down and then most of the way home. I swapped in an out of 4wd as needed, but left it in 4wd probably 90% of the time coming home.

I ended up going with around 400lbs of weight in the bed, loaded as far forward as possible to squat the truck evenly. I found it actually made a difference, even when in 4wd. I felt more secure and "glued" to the road if that makes any sense.

It’s not necessary with 4x4 and decent tires, but as you stated....it makes a difference

I grabbed 3 scrap 3ft long sections of 15x40 channel iron from work and welded them together. 40lbs per foot times roughly 9 ft. The way I welded them (2 side by side with the 3rd centered on top) allowed me to run a ratchet strap through them. That combined with the rubber bed mat I have meant they didn't budge at all.
