Hypertech vs. Bully Dog

The hypertech doesn't crack the ecu. It works now. But 16-17 seems to have a higher chance of a check engine light.

 

Let me clarify for those who may get the "cracked" term way out of context. The PCM on 09 production month of this year and later is not fully accessible which leads to CEL codes and will put the engine in limp mode( in time ). Can you put it on your truck and count on it to start up, yes you can but you will have problems later down the road. The pedal module with the HT Interceptor isn't needed because of the signal changes that the throttle gets on the 07-13 models which are different on the 14+ models. It changed in 2014 to current. BullyDog has said they will have a solution in the spring/summer 2017 for the non-supercharged vehicles and non FFV. As far as any others like Superchips and Egde, I haven't heard much on but I am always checking due to the popularity of this mod.

 

did toyota change the pin out on their mass air meter or something? because the interceptor doesn't do anything to the ecu, it only intercepts and modifies the signal from the mass air meter and iat

 

Well, I'm interested in a tuner. My '16 cut power to the engine today when I accelerated hard to get around a one man obstruction to traffic. My other Tundras never did that.

 

A tuner won't stop that. Your traction and stability control is the culprit.

 

Well yes, nannies were on, but I wasn't spinning the tires or cornering. It's something I'm gonna have to play with to figure out since you've gotta be stopped to turn off vsc and I don't usually plan in advance to punch it like that.

 

so what is the general consensus? BD or HT?
I already have the HT speedo healer so I'm not concerned with that.

WOW! I just read about the BD Platinum Gas programmer. It seems that it does EVERYTHING but start the truck.

 

BD is the way to go. With all of its features plus the ability to upload the SC program for those going with the Magnuson kit ( on certain truck models ), its to me the best all around tuner out right now.

 

I have the Bullydog GT tuner (40417) for my '14, I would recommend it as it changes vehicle settings, calibrates for bigger tires, hp/tq, performance monitor. The biggest benefit I feel from the tuner is when it shifts, it does way better even under heavy acceleration.

I haven't done that yet, I should though, I never leave without putting it on. It gets really annoying when something heavy is in the passenger seat and it keeps on beeping faster and faster.

 

I was surprised when mind did that after I bought it. You're truck doesn't have to spin or be out of control for it to shut down power. It just has to calculate that it's going to. Test it out from a stop. Punch it and when it goes to shift, it will do it Everytime until you turn off the nannies.

 

Yep seemed like it cut at the shift point. I'm looking for a safe opportunity to try it with nannies on in sport mode as suggested by Hattori. I don't turn the nannies off every time I get in the truck. Nor can I predict when I might need/wand to accelerate like that. I got my truck a year ago yesterday and have only had the problem occur 2 maybe 3 times. I just want to know how to get around the issue, in case.

 

Yeah, turning them off Every time is unrealistic. Plus, the truck really does a pretty good job at keeping you on the road. I was able to miss 4 deer in the road before the sun came up and not go into a ditch or worse, a few months ago. I consider myself a good driver, but I know the truck safety controls kept me from wrecking.

 

What's the different between the gt model and the box? Which one is better?

Mine cut out on me last week when accelerating hard up an on-ramp to get on the interstate. Conditions were dry and it was a strait line. This is some bs in my opinion! This type of computer controlled crap could have got me killed.

 

That's how I feel. I wonder if the older power control module would work in the newer trucks

 

After i get my lift done i was curuous...I know the BullyDog has a lot of features but If I don't really mind the speedometer being off would it be necessary to get both BullyDog and the Speedo calibrator? I guess a better way to put it is besides the Speedo is there anything that the hypertext Speedo calibrator does that the BullyDog doesn't? Or would I be ok getting the BullyDog and just dealing with the Speedo being off?

 

I don't know what size tires you're planning to run but, several times now, I've driven by those digital things that the Highway Patrol puts up to tell you your speeding. I've been shocked to see that even with 295 70 18s my speedo is very close or spot on. So, I don't see the need for the speedo calibrator in my future. Before you think about the Hypertech, make sure you need it.

 

If you get the BD you won't need the HT. I wish I would have known that before I got the speedo recalibrator. I plan to get the BD soon so I will most likely sell the HT if anyone would want it.

 

So.... I'm reading crazy mixed feelings... I have a BD on the way... I'm so excited but now have mixed feelings. Time will tell! I'll update after I install it

 

Well, what's your opinion after having it 9 months? I'm looking at a BD over a HT after reading all of these comments. I have a '17 5.7 flex.

 

Definitely more responsive, shifts better, and like the settings I can change. I have everything in performane mode and I don't care what people say I do notice a difference. My tundra is more awake now

 

I noticed on performance everything for me on steep sharp uphill turns going up and down it downshifted pretty hard, plus too aggressive on the skinny pedal, slightest touch and it moved fast which is kind of annoying but I try to ease into it.

Maybe I need to love my BD again, I haven't used it for a while, I almost wanted the DAP tune but then after much reading the BD offers the same thing but with more features.

 

Reviving this thread. BD states it calibrates the speedo meter now and includes many functions for the FFV. I am hoghly considering this option as an easy plug n play.

 

What's the price for the BD?

 

Yes BD is a good investment. Like stated, better shifts, more responsive and I have any info I want on my truck with the click of a button. Just my .02

I just upgraded to 315x70-R17 (34.4" x 12.4") this last Thursday. Today I set the cruise control at an indicated 70mph, and gps verified my speed was 73/74mph

I'm considering leaving it alone It's close enough.

What I'm interested in though, is folks without a Supercharger. Have you seen any fuel economy improvements, OR shift point improvements after going to 35" tires?
