i have browsed trying to find out what this is. I had a aem intake on my 14 but don’t want to put it on my 18. It seems this mod is the way to go. Can anyone point me where I can read about it or explain it? Thanks

    None, yet....
    Nothing.

All you are doing is adding another hole for water to get into if you go wheeling. Without any supporting mods to increase the volumetric efficiency of the motor, this is worthless. The hole provide to the oem is already large enough, since believe it or not, actual science goes to determining this hole size. Could you smooth out the air coming in and see a tiny gain? Sure. Thing is, the gains you’ll see will be at the very top of the of the rpm band, effectively almost never seeing this is normal driving.

Another problem is, you are taking “smooth” air to then feed it to a corrugated hose which will cause tumbling and effectively making this thing moot. I think I saw somewhere that someone claims to have dyno results for this, but they didnt do the pulls back to back so we don’t know weather conditions and/or heat soak conditions.

Im happy to be proved wrong though, if someone has actual data to post.

I did it. Also upgraded to the AFE dry filter.

For those wondering what it is, it’s basically a modification in your stock air box. You add another 4 inch tube to suck in twice as much air into your stock air intake box.

You can definitely hear an extra growl when you get on the gas. As to HP gains. I don’t notice and incredibe difference. It does seem slightly more responsive at first. But now I’m 15,000 miles in and used to it. Never dyno’d it.

But I would say, since the stock air box sucks air from the wheel well. And the aftermarket does the same. There isn’t much of a different between going aftermarket intake vs the SABM. I would rather do the SABM and upgrade the filter instead of buying any aftermarket intake. The aftermarket air filter is really the key to allowing more air flow into your engine.

It’s just supposed to add more air volume to the intake. A stock 5.7 doesn’t need it. If you’re Supercharged I hear it makes sense.
I did it to my previous Tundra (2007 5.7) and didn’t notice any difference in power and no increase in mpg. My filter fit was off also. I used a TRD filter and had to cut a relief in the filter where the SABM coupler mounted on the inside of the box. Not worth it in my opinion.

It won't add more air. It might add cool noise. It won't add water to your intake unless you turn your truck into a boat, but in the event that you do the mod can't be blamed. If there is any restriction at the airbox, this may relieve it, but you are still not going to exceed the volume of air that your intake tube/throttle body/intake manifold/intake valves permit. If the supercharged motor uses the same airbox then the normal one isn't suffocating.

There was a similar popular mod on first gens, a guy did a science experiment to measure vacuum in the box pre-filter and post-filter at various throttle ranges. He found a mild vacuum before the filter at wide open throttle and opened a hole to relieve it, eliminating a minor restriction that only appeared at wide open throttle.
