Anyone ever compare the 2007 to current tundras to Chevy's,Ford's and dodges? The drivetrain on our trucks are so much bigger and stronger. Tie rods, sway bars, brake rotors, brake calipers,etc... It is a 3/4 ton truck with a half ton body! So that being said, our trucks are a great deal when you compare apples to apples! Just my 2 cents worth

I do know one thing. Our 07 with 131,000 miles looks a whole lot better than almost any other (Big 3) 1/2 ton out there the same age. It has really held up well.

OP, Your truck is definitely looking great!

When I bought it 4 months ago I washed it, polish buffed the paint, and buffed in meguires 2.0 paint sealant and then buffed in meguires gold class wax.I wax it every time I wash it.I never take it through the scrub type car washes I always hand wash and use meguires wash and wax car wash.

Looking clean my friend. Wish I was that anal about my big truck. I was kind of like that with my old Camaros and Cadillacs, but IMO if those cars don't look immaculate, well you aren't really pimping. Those wire spoke wheels on my old 1991 Brougham, I was out there with a pipe cleaner all the time polishing them. I remember removing some of the hood and body side trim from the car so I could polish it on a bench mounted buffing wheel, some of that stuff was stainless steel or uncoated aluminum that wouldn't look right unless you took it over a high speed buff with compound.

A big old truck, well as long as it looks pretty damn clean(ie I wax it/detail it every 3 months), I'm just not as picky.

And one of the reasons I bought a Tundra were the huge brakes and great pedal feel on the brakes. Yes its a heavy truck, no it don't stop like a sports car, but still I feel safe with the brakes on this truck, especially compared to some of the older trucks I've driven with shit ass brakes(90's Chevy trucks, my old 1993 Toyota).

When I wash it I use turtle wax dry and wax.when you are finished washing it I drive it a mile or two and the will there is some water on it I spray the wax and dry on a couple panels and use a micro fiber towel to dry it .only takes around 15 minutes to do it.I do the windows and all. Also remember to spray wax your wheels makes it much easier to remove road grime and brake dust.

I did some searches before I purchased my truck. Found one of the off road magazines had ford, chevy, dodge 3/4 ton axles and differentials all disassembled along side a tundra rear axle. The rear axle and differential is as heavy as any 3/4 ton truck.

The rear springs on the other hand,... a bag of groceries and a gallon of milk is all it takes to squat the rear end down. I recently added air bags to mine. Now I can haul all kinds of groceries without the headlights pointing up into the trees. :bananadance::dancingbacon::broccoli:

Our rear axles are beasts, but everything else about the truck screams 1/2 ton. Love the truck, but its not without its limitations.

The Tundra is still quite a bit outgunned by the 3/4 tons in terms of axle, frame, and overall chassis construction, so I don't think the Tundra is a 3/4 ton truck with a 1/2 ton body.

With that said, I do agree the Tundra is the most overbuilt out of all the 1/2 ton trucks.

    No it's not.

I agree on the leaf springs.I compared it to a 2017 chevy Silverado I detailed a couple months ago and the tie rods,c v axles etc...looked so small compared to mine.I had a 1985 short bed Silverado 25 years ago the was a beast! I hooked a 14 x 70 mobile home to the bumper and held it.(it had an overbuilt rear bumper) the company I work for wouldn't guarantee my truck pulling it out of a muddy road so I unhooked it.I had hauled 12 squares of shingles in the bed and it bearly squatted the truck! But it road rough! There is give and take in everything!

Tried locating the article. That was about 8 years ago before I purchased the truck. At the very least it's way overbuilt compared to other half ton axles. I'm doing my best to work it like a 3/4 ton. Adding the airbags really helped. Sometimes I need it to be a one ton. Hauled 16,000 pounds of crushed asphalt in a big dump trailer a few weeks ago. It was only a few miles and I took it slow. The bitch was the dump trailer wouldn't lift the load so I had to use my tractor to unload half of it before it would dump.

The article you're referring to is here: http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/transmission-drivetrain/2007-toyota-tundra-rear-axle/

The author said the Tundra's rear differential was comparable to that of a 3/4 ton, but he is taking some liberties with that phrasing. Some of the 3/4 ton axles he was comparing the Tundra to were older variants. The newer 3/4 ton rear axle differential used by both GM and Ram in their HD pickup's is actually pictured in that article and is noticeably bigger than what's on the Tundra.

The Tundra is certainly overbuilt within its class, but the 3/4 and 1 ton's are more heavy-duty in comparison.

Ha! Nice find. You must be some kind of internet guru. ;)

For what it's worth, I've worked for a boat storage and repair company for last 18 years. Early on they got into snowplowing in winter to make up work in winter season. Both businesses blew up. Now there's hundreds of boats and a fleet of plow trucks. All the 3/4 and 1 ton GM trucks are all heavy duty springs and rear axle in the back and many exact same parts as a half ton truck up front. Every single truck from a 93 one ton, an 07 and a 2011 one ton (I think is newest) all have broken frames, cracked, welded, scabbed onto. Front differentials go out regularly and they're a pain to swap. One F250 1998, axles have held up, engine held up, frame busted a couple times. Steering column worn out and replaced. One F350 in the fleet. A 1997 one ton I rebuilt the rear diff couple years ago. Pretty solid truck but the 7.5 diesel is a gutless turd. There's one 4500 Chevy. Replace u-joints and axle joints annually. Worst riding truck on the planet. If you took the shocks out I don't think it would be any different. Just rattles your teeth and constant problems. A few older trucks that have been retired and/or sold off.

I don't plow with the Tundra but it does see a fair amount of work. It's always loaded, I'm always towing stuff. 166k on the clock and nothing but minor repairs. If Toyota ever puts together that one ton it's going to be tough on the competition.
