So, if you remember, I'm new to the forum here and back in July I traded my 14 Tundra for a new 18. At first I was getting between 18.5 & 20 mpg. 6 weeks in and now i'm at a whopping 13.6 mpg. I drive this truck to and from work, thats it. I take the same way everyday and I even purchase gas at the same gas station every Friday. We did reset the ECM and cleared the learning values on the truck, again mileage went back up to 19.5 but that lasted for only one day, today I'm back down to 13.6. I can't stress enough that I drive this thing like I'm 90 years old. Im not in the pedal hot rodding the shit out of it, so with that in mind, I'm actually getting ready to pull the trigger on a new 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro so I can get the 18-22 mpg. Any thoughts?

I average 10.7 and quite happy. I'd never go back to a Taco. Not near as much fun to drive and underpowered.

In all seriousness, do what is best for you and your commute. I would love a DD but can't afford, so Tundra it is.

My miles to empty on a full tank was about 550 new. Now at 5000 miles, when I fill up it’s around 440. I think the truck doesn’t know at first. Are you going off the truck saying 18.5 - 20, or were you actually calculating at fill up? I think you were always around 13 mpg. Would the gas saving be worth the loss from trading in a new Tundra for a Tacoma?

I couldn't even tell you what my MPG is, haven't looked in months because I love the truck and low MPG won't make me sell it. Last time I did look I was at 14.3

My calculations were from fill up, not going off of what the ECO was reading.

3” lift, black step bars, aftermarket wheels, LT305/55R20 was this way when I brought it.
When I fill up and and drive all interstate I avg about 18 on the Eco reset. I always use the app Fuelly and it shows 18.7-19.2 driving highway. But in the city/highway 13-16 avg. 04A1A7D7-3AA3-494A-84E6-DBA3456B1DE1.jpg I love the power when I need it. Also I am 6’-4” and had spine surgery 12 months ago. And getting into a Tacoma is too hard, too crapped. I have a 1794 and love it, very happy with the mileage. I got the 18.7-19.2 driving home from Pensacola to Palestine Tx. Loaded with me and the wife and luggage and cooler in the back, running stock tires 275/55R20 small lift not sure what it is. Running 87 octane.

before you trade in, do some math. Any trade in losses, sales tax etc. vs the amount of fuel savings that you may get. It may be a long payoff........

This depreciation factor is key here, but if one has plenty of money and feels a trade down to a lesser truck works for them then thats their decision. More power to them!

Reminds me of a guy that used to drive 50 miles to save .05 cents per gallon on gas verses just going to the corner station 1/2 mile away from home. His net was a huge loss, but he saved .05 per gallon!

OP, mine has 11,4## miles. I drive 5 miles each way, back and forth to work, half freeway, half main residential paved roads and catch about half the red lights. One a week a drive 20 miles on the freeway and back again. I've never done any hand calculations, and also never pushed reset on my MPG averager shown on the dash display-- I don't care to know that I get better mileage flat or downhill on a freeway than in a traffic jamb; I already know that.

I spent the first 5k at 12.6 mpg. Then I did a long road trip, mainly on well-maintained paved roads, and returned home with an average 13.6 overall. Local driving, it went to 13.5, then another road trip got me back to 13.6 where it's been without change for 1500 miles.

I think our big ass awesome trucks get 13.6 mpg. It is what it is.

I wouldnt trade for a tacoma. You'll probably dislike it coming from a Tundra.

Also, the loss you'll take (you will take a loss) will take a while to negate the cost of fuel unless you're driving a lot.

The Tacoma is SMALL compared to the tundra. (Obviously right?) but seriously it’s tiny. I had a 2015 and averaged 14mpg. I know the new ones are better but I wouldn’t expect more than 16

I average 9 miles per gallon right now. But my commute is less than 10 minutes and one of those minutes is idling in my driveway. I filled up at Costco today and did a hand Calc it was 11.5 MPG. Then I drove about 12 miles and the fuel gauge dropped already. I think it shut off before the tank was full Lmao! 9 miles per gallon it is! I think that’s due to the engine not being fully warmed up. I get more like 12 to 13 mpg in the city but we have a lot of stop lights and traffic. Out on the highway I get between 15 and 18 mpg driving between 70 and 80 mph. But I can’t get myself to drive like a grandpa through the entire tank of gas. I’m always on the throttle listening to the beautiful exhaust note.

I’m getting around 14. Got a bit over 16 in my Jeep so I can live with it. The go pedal is worth the loss. It took me two week to get the nerve to jump across the intersection, something I wasn’t as willing to do in the jeep. May upgrade to a larger tank down the road just so I don’t have to stop as often to fill up.

I'm not going to convince you otherwise... If you want better gas mileage get a different truck or vehicle. I don't know why people expect better mpgs out of these engines. There is a reason why Toyota hasn't updated them in awhile, because they are bulletproof. I would rather have that than 3 more mpgs.

All TRUE! I think he’s more concerned with why was it hand calculating so much better before and now such a huge difference? Like is there something wrong with the truck. Although with Tacoma statement maybe he is wanting that better gas mileage. I don’t think the Tacoma’s get that much better gas mileage.
My last two vehicles both got similar gas mileage to the tundra, so it was no big deal for me. It’s the price I pay because I want horse power and the V8. If I had to travel a lot for work, I would think differently and at least get a cheap DD.

I occasionally drive my 03 sequoia when the parking will be sketchy. If economy is is a factor it’s the wifes 08 XB with 25-30 mpg.
Someday I want to get her a 4runner or Taco.
She wants a Jeep! Pfff! Nope! Only if I can make it a trailer queen.

Although I appreciate most responses here, I guess theres always a few assholes in the bunch that try to be funny. Regardless, I recently drove a Taco for a week, now with my Tundra it cost me $101.00 to fill up every week. The taco cost $55, to and from work its 66 miles round trip. The dealer is actually offering me a pretty good deal, i'll be getting back money and lowering my monthly payment. Add that with the $45 a week i'll be saving in gas, seems like a pretty good option for me, my only issue is interior space...
