Ultimate Plastidip Thread - What have you dipped?

Oh yeah, i've got to reapply to badges and grill, bumpers are holding up well. Gonna do the wipers and the black plastic area where wipers sit. It's faded some, so need to bring it back to life, also gotta redo rims.

After five coats of black, two coats of Graphite Metalizer, and one coat of Glossifier:

I had the emblems dipped as well, but have since removed them. I also had the rear bumper dipped, too, but I was rear-eneded recently so I'll be getting a new chrome bumper. Deciding whether I want to do a legit color matched paint job or just be lazy and dip it again haha.

 

Has anyone blacked out the grill and bulge on a Metallic Grey SR5?

I don't need any primer or clear coat? I seriously just need to wash it off good and then use masking tape and plastidip for chrome bumper? Also Have some spots where chrome came off and a tiny bit of rust. Will that effect anything much?

 

Primer is not neccessary. However, you may see texture where the chrome came off, so maybe primer filler and sand if you want it perfect. But the main key is to have the surface clean and bone DRY. Clear coat is optional. You can use Plasti Dip Glossifier for a glossy finish. They even make a satin finish. There are also a variety of metalizers and pearlizers you can use, too. Or you can leave it as is for a matte finish.

 

Thanks. Matte black looks good from what I've seen, but I haven't looked at any with those other finishes yet.

 

I've done a bunch of rims and badges - don't have a lot of pics with me but I did the wheels, front and rear badges, and the side trim and rear diffuser on my Veloster R-Spec.

I haven't done anything on my Tundra TRD Offroad yet, but planning on blacking out the grill and going with red emblems.

 

Also, people in here have asked how to remove plastidip and I have seen some interesting solutions.. In my opinion, though, the best answer is that if you put on enough coats, it will peel off in a single peel. It's a PITA to clean off if you went to thin. 5-6 coats minimum, imo.

Tried out the plastidip this week. Started with the 3 emblems on the outside then did the interior center council pieces. 5-6 coats of gray with 2-3 coats of glossifier. Interior pieces were a little more tough because the dip did not want to separate between the two surfaces.

Yeah, I love the black wheels. They've held up just fine, no problems or peeling or anything. But I don't drive my truck too much. Only put on about 3-4000 miles since dipping. But it has been parked outside the entire time and is exposed to the weather. I just need them to last until my tires wear out, then I'm gonna buy new wheels. If you're going to do it, make sure you watch a bunch of youtube videos, they're very helpful. And make sure to buy a spray can gun. They're like $7, you won't make it through without one. Last tip, do it in warm weather. The paint gets thick and clumpy when it's cold and won't be smooth. If you have to do it in the cold, dunk the cans in hot water to warm them up. Good Luck.

 

Hey has anyone tried the plasti dip smoke over chrome ?? Just a thought.

 

Plasti Dipped my wheels again. But I did something different (or dumb, depending on who you ask).

Before:


Driver side: Black base coat, Bright Aluminum Metalizer, and Glossifier.


Passenger side: Black base coat, Pure Gold Alloy Dip Pearl, Glossifier



Not my best work, pretty sloppy. But I like it. The gold looks different depending on the angle and the aluminum looks cool all around. Eventually they'll be matching again. Or not...

 

Wait, train horns... you have to install a compressor? I'd love a sizable horn upgrade that doesn't require an onboard compressor...

 

@JC303 when you Plastidipped your front bumper (with the parking sensors) did you tape off the sensors, remove them or just Plastidipped them?? Thanks. I'm gonna plastidip my front bumper ends and was wondering the best way to do that.

 

When doing the Center Grill - did you remove the grill from the truck or just tape everything off? If you removed the grill, how bid of a PITA is it to do?

I sprayed my front bumper ends after a good cleaning and taped off it turned out great, few months now in Florida sun and still looks good

 

BTW if yall need to fix chips on your dip, grab some xylene from the paint section at the hardware store. Wet your finger with it and rub the area.... It will level it off and taper the edges of the chip. Then respray. If you respray straight over the chip you will see the edges since the dip is at different levels.

If you find it hard to remove......you went to thin. easier to spray a thick coat, let it dry and come back tomorrow and peel it off.
