Hi people, so my 2018 Tundra is now having the PCS malfunction pop up on my dashboard saying to clean sensors randomly on a clear day, took it to dealership and was informed that my rear bumber that has a scratch but was told it was a dent which is no way near close to a dent from looking up real close might be causing the sensors to malfunction and might need to be recalibrated, can someone explain to me how something so small from the rear bumper actually be the reason and how my Pre collision sensor is causing the malfunction?

I'd ask them how the F*** a rear bumper scratch can be related to the PCS which is located up front

They were saying that the front sensors and rear sensor are all connected, and if the rear sensor is out of sync, it messes up all the sensors?

That’s what I said, I’m hoping we have a Toyota mechanic in the forum that can give some insight to how the rear bumper has something to do with the PCS

Heck if what they told you is true I am getting rid of my truck. A rear bumper is going to get dinged, that is what it is designed for...........

So the rear bumper is in no way damage that
I said the exact same thing, how can a truck be that sensitive?

So I got my truck back from getting checked, and was informed they didn’t see any codes during diagnosis and no replacement was needed, advice I was told was just to take pictures or take it in when it happens again. I did ask that since the truck came clean from codes if they can still use my rear bumper as a reason even though no codes came out of it the first time and was told yes. How does that make sense?

I agree. *if* the rear bumper was the cause, it should be very easy for them to duplicate.

However, I'm thinking this is another example of a poorly educated/trained member of the dealership that is looking for a reason NOT to fix your vehicle, rather than fix it.

With my truck being the first new vehicle I've ever purchased (and as such the only vehicle I've ever had serviced at a dealer), I've had very poor experiences with multiple dealers on multiple trips to the service department. I've had jobs performed inadequately, I've had fasteners left off of my vehicle, and just a general lack of initiative to do it right the first time.

Unfortunately, it sounds like your best bet may be to search for a new dealer.

This brings to mind an old saying: "the sales department will sell the first vehicle, and service will sell every one after that."

We have other threads on this, it has absolutely nothing to do with ANY bumper sensors and dealer is a bunch of idiots. If you have another dealer near you please go visit them. The sensor is behind the front grill emblem and works with the camera on windshield behind rearview mirror.

As an added note, some sensors need replaced, some need recalibrated and some get fixed with software updates.

It's a race to the bottom with auto manufacturers. Does the technology work reliably? No? Screw it, put it in the vehicle anyway. We might be able to fix it a few years down the road.

 As others have stated the rear BSM and RCTA is a completely separate system, trucks with chrome bumpers do not even have them. Plenty of people have ditched the rear bumper systems and replaced with aftermarket bumpers, and I have personally had my bumper removed without any PCS issues. Dealerships do not know how the system works, only diagnostics, repairs, and recalibration. Go to a different dealer.

Here’s an image of the scratch but was considered a collision by the service person I was speaking too,

Not even close to a dent, yet it would be a cause???

Dude. Call your regional customer.service. fuck that dealer. My 2018 had it replaced 3 times inside 4k miles. DONT take it up the butt. Skip your local and bring the ban hammer. There will not be a code. Trust me

That dealership is a DISGRACE and is the very reason there is so much distrust for them in general. You will need to find a legit/competent dealership elsewhere and by all means get the regional rep involved.
