I swear factory orange peel on new cars get's worse every generation. Here on a brand new 2019 Platinum Tundra has worse orange peel than my 1994 Toyota (also super white).

Anyone else's orange peel this bad? I know robots paint the trucks but I feel like mine was painted on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon. smh. This isn't even the worst I have seen. I have seen worse orange peel on a brand new C7 vette.

What would the dealership do? If my truck is out of the ordinary and much worse than others, then I would build a case. Kind of the point of making this thread. If this orange peel is the norm, then I guess I am SOL, unless I take this directly with Toyota.

    Anyone else's this bad?

It’s every truck and car. The only ones I haven’t really noticed it that bad on are metallic colors.

Only thing you can do is wet sand it and respray it. But I wouldn’t have the dealer do it. Research a reputable body shop that knows what their doing.

Anyone attempt to have a detailer block it and try to correct it, with a protective ceramic coating on top? I know sanding the top clear coat would take out most of the UV protection, but hoping a good top layer of ceramic coating like opticoat pro plus would help protect it.

I would not do that. I bet the clear coat is not very thick and you can sand right through it. I would rather just accept it the way it is (which I have - I have noticed the same on my truck)

dealer is one of the last resorts I would consider. find yourself a good detail shop and let them have at it.

You could wrap it. Wraps are really expensive though. I think a good shop could color sand it and shoot a clear over it.

Best thing to do is to have a reputable body shop look over any new Toyota before signing the dotted line.
    Just my .2 cents

That’s compound, (heavy cut pad), Polish, and ceramic. It will still be noticeable. Might help a little, but it won’t be perfect.

    * dealer will do nothing to correct the orange peel.
    * don’t cut and buff the factory clear; too easy to burn through.
    * ceramic will only magnify the flaws.

The factory paint job has minimal clear, only .0015 maybe .002. THIN.
The best you can do is go with a lighter color, and don’t look at it at an angle in the shade. I looked at a new 2019 TRD Pro in midnight black metallic, and the orange peel was really bad. Can’t see it so much from 10 feet, but get up close and it is not pretty. Skimping on paint.

Did mine without any issues. Ceramic made the truck look great. And didn’t magnify anything on my white truck.

Be very careful if you sand and buff. Toyota super white is single stage paint.... No clear coat.

You’re an exception. Most dealers will compare against other white trucks on the lot, find the same condition and call it acceptable. If I’m not mistaken, white is a single stage paint, and a light color sand is not as risky as two stage paint (black or mgm).

You can only see it on a clean truck. I keep mine dirty; the orange peel is hardly noticable. Problem solved.

Your very correct on single stage and risk. From what I understand if you use a lighter pad when compounding on a darker color (two stage) paint you will get a better outcome after polish is applied.

Orange peel will still remain until you decide to sand it down. My 08 had heavy oxidation and i was able to remove it with polish alone (test spots since I was being cautious at first) Although I still decided to compound ( heavy pad)+ polish, the FACTORY ORANGE PEEL WAS STILL THERE AFTER 10 years with the products applied. I said screw it and went with ceramic. Truck looks fine and is easy to wash.

It boils down to what the owner is good with. Me personally I’m fine with a little orange peel. But I also can see frustration in buying a 50k truck and shits not perfect.

If it's not on both sides it could have been damaged and repaired before being sold. I'd try to find a paint depth gauge and see what the measurements are.

Is it the whole truck or just the l/h side? You are going to have some orange peel on automated paint jobs "no color sanding". You can remove a lot of it by strip wash, clay bar, light compound and polish.

Contact the selling dealer and see what they have to say, they may buck it because you already took delivery of the vehicle.

All of us will find orange peel on our garbage paint. Same for most factory paint jobs on run of the mill vehicles today, including the more expensive ones. There is nothing the dealer will do, no matter how much texting you do with them lol

The guys saying “mines fine!” I’m willing to bet just haven’t looked with proper lighting at the right angles.

My 2018 cement has noticable orange peel. If you walk around the dealership you will notice it on all of the trucks.

Mine has it really bad. I wish I would've noticed at time of purchase (at night). I'm thinking of wet sanding it and polishing it off. There's a huge risk of burning thru the thin single stage 202 Black paint.

If your going to have it done. I would have a very reputable body shop that has done it before take on the task. Like have them do the tailgate first or something so you can see what kind of work they do. The tail gate can be removed from the truck and worked on.

I understand the desire to have it done, but the paint is so thin already that I would not do it. The chances of burning throught it just out weights the chances of it turning out a success.
It would be nice if a shop could add a few layers of clear coat and then color sand that to a glass finish, but that's not feasible.
