5.7 Engine Failures?

    I am new to the Tundra world and came over from Ford for the Toyota reliability. Just curious has anyone personally experienced a failure (requiring rebuild) of the 5.7 motor? I am assuming this would be experienced really early on or after several 100k miles unless there was serious maintenance neglect in the middle years.

    My 07 is purring like a tiger. It's been well maintained. The 5.7 can develop
    cam tower leaks. Several here have the issue. Haven't seen hardly any posts here about total engine failure.

    Bought mine used with 26,000 miles, I'm close to pushing 65,000, had to change out belt tensioner and idler pulley as they were squealing at 45,000 as of now no other issues, oil changes are done on time

    Agree! It was not unheard of to see someone post about an engine block penetration in the 1st 1500 miles. The plastic oil pan in the new F150s doesn’t help to contain the mess.

    Sold my 2007 SR5 with 74,000 miles. I maintained it like my life depended on it, perfectly according to schedule, ALL maintenance. The guy who bought it calls me up 3 months later, engine seized up at 76,000 miles. Tells me it was something mechanical (spring/lifter malfunction or failure?) and NOT that he failed to put oil in it or anything. Toyota corporate gets involved and states that it is entirely a FREAK occurrence and offers to replace the engine free of charge. I think that is crazy that #1 - it happened in the first place, and #2 - that Toyota corporate was so shocked that it happened that they offered to replace the engine.

    180K miles here, i'd take it to the edge of the world and back with confidence, my V12 Benz with 70K miles, i have trouble trusting it to get me to the local groceries store and back.

    Yeah that sounds abnormal. But it’s all made by humans and errors are bound to happen. I’m glad Toyota stepped up on that one!

    I’m a member of several Tundra forums, and I cannot remember hearing of any low mileage catastrophic failure of the Toyota 5.7 engine.

    (Edit: As noted here by several other people, supercharged engines are the exception, rarely making it to 200k)

    You’re more likely to hear of 300k, 400k, 500k miles on trucks that are still running strong.
    The camshaft tower leak is a well documented problem and there is several threads about it if you are interested. I’m not sure about the actual percentage of trucks with the problem but it’s very irritating to those who have experience with it. Not catastrophic, not even a cause of failure, just irritating and unnecessary.

    I purchased my '07 with 270k undocumented miles on it, it's running great and problem free with 282K today. I love the little 5.7, it is a great engine.

    what's that? only thing I had a problem with my secondary air valve had to be replaced on my 2012 tacoma with full refund from Toyota 800.00.

    3” lift, black step bars, aftermarket wheels, LT305/55R20 was this way when I brought it.
    I have only enjoyed my 2015 Tundra CM 1794 for about a year now, but they put 5.7 in tundras around 2007 and it is 2019 and the same engine is still being used only a few small changes that tells me it is a great engine.     I bought it used, but it has been a full time daily driver/work truck since i got it. Previous owner didnt put alot of mileage on it but they hauled a fifth wheel when they did often.

    i know a guy who after 140k supercharged miles (30k miles with bully dog and underdrive pulley) cracked the driver's side head, and he drove the $h!T out of it. still does with a new (used) and still supercharged engine. bottom end is near bulletproof and the top end too if you aren't searching for sub 5 second 0-60 times ;-)

    Thanks for the info. Just to clarify, I wasn’t concerned about the 5.7 power train. I was pleasantly surprised that the only issue I found when researching was the cam tower leak. I figured with a mass produced engine for this many years there had to be a few duds. Glad to hear Toyota stepped up and took care of the owner when it happened outside of warranty.

    My F150 5.0 oil pan was steel. Must be some tuff plastic. Goes perfect with the aluminum body and post accident self igniting insulation. LoL
