Stock wiring for Amp didn’t go as planned

    I finally got around to installing my JL Audio 500/5 amp. My plan was to use the Metra 70-1761 and Metra 71-1761 wiring harnesses.


    However, once installed my ac didn’t start and my truck lagged voltage so bad. Not sure what is going on. I just simply matched colors from both adapters.


    Also, the sound when touching the navigation deck for button acknowledgement is so loud it’s unbearable.


    I am going to replace the stock navigation deck with an aftermarket soon and try it again.


    Any ideas?

    I think that’s what it is.

    I bought a cheap cca 0-awg kit online. I’m going to redo the wiring once I get another kit that’s true 4-awg ofc.

    Also, my amp was showing the low ohm light with no load off and on. I think it may be the cheap wiring.

    I think it’s not wired properly. Copper is copper unless you’re running 10,000 watts. Matching colors isn’t the proper way to install a harness. Harness wires are universal in color and every vehicle manufacturer has their own colors they use. You’re issue is it’s not wired properly.

    Gotcha.
    My bet is you had it wired incorrectly.

    If you don't have a dsp, I would just swap the head unit.

    Yes. I’m going to just swap out the radio. Easier and more beneficial imo.

    Don’t wire the radio using the same method you used to wire the amp. You may want to bring it to a shop if you’re not 100% sure what you’re doing.

    I do know what I’m doing. I just didn’t research the plugs. Assumed they were matched. No biggie.

    I’ll get a new head unit and redo my amp wiring with ofc. This cca wire is pure garbage.

    Hopefully that will help my low ohm light and voltage drops in my truck.

    Sorry if you’re offended. But you can’t assume anything when it comes to wiring modern vehicles. You can cause serious damage to your electronics otherwise.

    Your “low ohm” light and voltage drops in the truck indicate serious wiring issues. And not with the wire itself, but with how and what it’s connected too. Ofc wiring vs standard copper is not going to cause any of the issues you are mentioning. In fact you will never notice any difference whatsoever with a low power single amp system.

    Just telling you the truth.

    I don’t think it was the amp all along. Won’t know for sure until I do the final installation.

    In between my circuit breaker and battery I used an old 0-awg wire I had. Very bad voltage drop there.

    Used the 0-awg wiring that I had recently and easily 12V. So I believe that’s the low ohm light cause. I did connect the amp to the battery and no low ohm light. Powered right up with no warnings. So we will see if it works once I get time to install again.

    You didn’t have the amps power wire connected directly to the battery before?

    I’m saying I have the 0-awg wire installed still in the truck. The old piece was connected to the breaker and the battery. The other side of the breaker is the new 0-awg wiring. I removed that old piece and breaker and used the same wiring. No low ohm light and powered up.

    CCA wire is fine as long as you get the correct size. 0 gauge CCA will work just the same as OFC 4 gauge.

    So the wire harnesses, were they going to be used as high level inputs for the amp?

    The description on Amazon for the female wire harness doesn't inspire confidence in what they are selling.

    It starts of saying it for select ford models, then at the end of the paragraph states its for "xx-xx" year Toyotas.

    Then it does the same thing in the next paragraph.

    Its hard to tell if they know which harness they are selling.

    what are you referring to? I bought Metra harnesses. Doesn’t matter from where. Actually it’s from SonicElectronics.

    But, I’m going to install an aftermarket head unit soon. Just thinking about what to get. It’ll probably be a cheap one for now to make sure this install with the amp works. Then, I’ll focus on a high end unit.
