I performed my first oil change today on my '15 5.7L since I purchased it in July. In addition to the Fumoto valve, I purchased a new oil filter cap assembly. The new assembly I purchased has a shorter perforated tube than the one that was on the truck.

Did I purchase the correct cap assembly? The part number on the box is 15620-31060 and I checked the number on the Cool Springs web site. The number checks out as the correct part number.

The black cap on the left was on the truck and the assembly on the right was just purchased. I put the original back on the truck for now.20191019_140942.jpg

Bend DOWN (edit) the tabs. Push longer center tube down and rotate. Center tube comes out. Replace long center tube in the aluminum housing leaving spring and valve disc in the bottom. Push down and rotate. Bend the tabs back UP (edit).

Smart of you to ask. Some don't and end up with long filter collapsing with filter media in the engine. If it stops up a bearing passage, you would be SOL.

    Yep. Swap the perforated tube.

The more expensive Dorman kit gives you 3 tubes to pick from, but go OEM if you're not in a bind. The OEM is also cheaper online than the Dorman.

Thanks for all of the replies. I have always done my own maintenance on my vehicles. This is my first experience with this type of filter. Still not sure why I have to swap out the tube if I purchased an OEM part.

Because that filter housing cap is from a Camry v6 which uses a much shorter filter
Element (model a-1) tundra uses a A4 which is the largest filter element Toyota manufactures

I did this swap too, as well as added a Fumoto valve. And was a bit confused at first til I read a few threads here and life was good again. Yes it's an OEM part, it's just not a Tundra part, I think it a venza filter housing with a shorter tube. Swap the tubes over and bam, you've got a custom OEM tundra filter housing. I use OEM filters from my dealer which work well and are cheaper than most filters at the auto parts store. My next mod will be cutting a hole to access the filter so don't need to mess with taking off, putting on , the skid plate every oil change, the small hole needed won't hurt anything but I may get a hinge and latch mechanism that I can use to rivet the piece I cut out and make a door

Try tilting the center piece and with a little force it will pop out and then do the reverse. I assume you don't need to bend the pins ...

@Red Freighter has done it this way. Maybe he can explain.

Can’t you just push down and twist instead of bending the pins?

I don't know what "pins" you guys are talking about.

If you've actually seen the center tube assembly, you know it has two tabs that are bent up on the base of the tube. The express purpose of these tabs is to retain the tube assembly in the housing; i.e. they prevent the base from rotating outside of the retainers that are molded/cast into the housing. We know that if it rotates outside those retainers, it WILL come out.

If you are asking can you "defeat" the retaining tabs using brute force, tilting, and wrenching, then yeah, it's thin stamped sheet metal, you probably can. It even sounds like someone has done it before. Try it, then you'll know.

Yes I had the same problem. Luckily before I installed the new one with short tower inside , I looked around the web and this forum and was able to change them out. Now I need to order another one for out Venza.
    Love yours. D

Sorry. Meant tabs, I had changed my wife’s highlander oil filter tube without bending the tabs. I thought they would be very similar. Here’s a YouTube link. https://youtu.be/V7CyIi4fVt4

Excellent video, and just what the OP needs. When the guy is pushing down inside the housing with the screwdriver, he's actually bending the tabs down. Later, after the tube assembly has been replaced, he uses the screwdriver to bend the tabs back up.

Maybe there is some variation in the tube assemblies. Mine was difficult enough to remove even with the tabs bent down. I did try to minimize the bending, because it was clear there wasn't a lot of room for tools in that housing to get them back up. Maybe "tilting" makes a difference, but it's hard for me to see it. Because the tabs are 180 deg apart across the base, if you tilt it down one way, you're raising the other side up. Since both tabs are going to have to clear a retainer at the same time, better to just push it all the down and turn...it they won't clear, then they aren't bent down enough.

    @JohnLakeman
in the video, he is bending the tabs up to remove and then down... Seems like you did the opposite.

If you have a filter housing with the center tube assembly installed, it's easy to see what needs to be done. The slightly out of focus photo below is of my original plastic housing with the short tube installed.

At the 12:00 o'clock position on the tube base, you can see the locking tab between two retaining lugs that are molded into the filter housing. There are two retaining lugs on each side of the tube, and two locking tabs 180 deg apart. Clearly, the tab has to be bent down in order to clear the retaining lugs. It's been two years since I replaced mine, so I had forgotten which direction to bend the tabs. I edited my first post soon after checked my old housing for "pins".

In the video, you can't tell what he's doing with the screwdriver, but he has to be pushing down on tab to bend it down for removal. After the installation, he's prying up on the tab to lock the long center tube between the two retaining lugs.

There are precision machine pins, tapered pins, split pins, clevis pins, roll pins, wrist pins, cotter pins, hair pins, straight pins, bowling pins, and others not recollected. I'm sure there ain't none of those in that Toyota filter housing.
