Suspension/Tire Size help

    Hello everyone. I acquired a stock 2002 Tundra AC with a TRD package this year and I'm at the point where I need to replace tires. I've read through the other threads but would appreciate some advice and suggestions for my situation. My goal would be to fit 285/70/r17 (or biggest possible without much trimming and adjustments). My wheel choice would be some American Racing AR172 Baja (Pro Comp 7069 could be a possibility). I'm still up in the air about tire brands but I was leaning towards BFGoodrich T/A KO2.

    I know that if I want to do this I'd have to mess with suspension. My preferred option for the time being would be to get a level kit from ReadyLift or Pro Comp. If I do choose to get a level kit would I also need to get a block kit for the rear? My second option would be to buy a lift kit from toytec but I'd prefer to do this when it comes time to replace the Bilstein that are already on the truck.

    285/70/17 will clear with a 2”/2.5” level no problem. Where you might run into some issue is offset on wheels. Too little will cause the tires to possibly rub the frame, too much and you will run on the pinch welds. Finding the perfect combination is the tough part.

    Myself, I will be running a 2.5” Toytec front lift and a 2” rear block. I plan on running 285/70/17’s with a 17x9 wheel with a -12 offset. Ideally a 285/75/17 would be best but tire choices are limited in that size (34”).

    I used an 16x8 wheel with 4.5 inches of backspacing on my gen 1. Cleared 285’s perfect.

    many wheels have only 4 inches of BS, and that can sometimes hit the fender

    I have 2.5” OME front suspension lift and 1.5” rear spacer (for now, planning on replacing with adjustable struts) and I am running 285/70r17. Nitto trail grapplers and Fuel Hostage wheels. I’ve been really happy with my setup all around.

    I'm assuming you're running 285/75/r16? Did you notice a change in ride quality or a decrease to mpg when upgrading to 285s? At the moment I use my Tundra more on road than off-road so depending how much it affects these things I might look at some 275/265 instead. From my understanding it doesn't look like I'll need regearing if I put 285s. I'm still open to using 16" instead of 17".

    Looking at the AR172 the 16" have 4.52 backspace and -25 offset and the 17" have 4.53 backspace with a -12 offset.

    Looks great! Did you have to do any trimming? How's the OME front lift on the road and off-road?

    It was my last truck @destrodrew

    yes the 285s did hit quickness and mpg a little.

    the 4.75 bs wheels may hit the frame with 285s if I remember

    They are considered good. First Gen Offroad sells a lot of them.

    Sorry for just the quote post. 04DCTundraMan, did you do UCA’s along with the OME lift? I’ve got the OME 2.5” kit with AAL’s for the rear on the way from Toytec, and it seems you can go either with the stock ones or get some aftermarket ones

    I have SPC UCAs, but they were done a year or so before the lift. Been doing things in stages as they wear out.

    I wanted to update this thread on what I went with. For the time being to make it easy on my wallet and schedule I decided on 265/70/r17. I went with BF Goodrich KO2s which are amazing. I've put around 1,200 miles so far on them and the difference between my old a/t tires is night and day. Off roading in the snow/mud is a walk in the park. I've taken it on two long distance trips since install and I can't tell a difference between the old tires and the KO2s in terms of ride quality and noise (honestly might be slightly better but they are new tires). My mpg seems to be about the same as before but I'll know for certain as time goes on. Looking forward to see how these tires continue to perform. For the wheels I went with AR Baja 172 with the -12 offset, no clearance issues at all. I plan on doing a suspension rebuild later this year and at this point I'll go with 285s or 315s.

    Looks nice and glad you're liking the tires! When they have some good wear in them, you'll start to notice some noise but nothing unbearable. But then again that is the nature of A/Ts.
