Magnuson vs. Harrop vs. Whipple - Supercharger showdown

As the title says, i am looking for a comparison of the 3. I would like to buy mine next year and haven't found much when it comes to making a decision between the three.

Anyone here have links to stats?

 

Getting it tuned or using a canned tune?
A tvs2650 ( harrop ) is bigger then a tvs1900 ( magnuson ) both are roots chargers, whipple is a twin screw charger so will be more 'efficient' and capable of making big numbers.

Both the harrop and whipple are easier to install, you don't have to mess with u-joints or wrenches on the intake bolts. The harrop will make more power then the magnuson with lower psi and heat gain, the whipple will make more power than the harrop. With the whipple, your make boost in the charger case itself ( more efficient) but that gain is offset by lower fuel economy, a roots can bypass boost and therefore you dont lose as much fuel economy.

The magnuson is a 'proven' charger...their canned tunes are proven on older tundras and closest to just a bolt-on and go.

If money is no object i would get the whipple and a custom tune, less cost would be a harrop with a canned tune, either way i would NOT get a magnuson, i hate my intake bolts everytime i need to remove them ( coupler replacement or charger refresh )

 

Thanks for the thorough answer. Surprised to hear the Magnuson is the “proven” one while also the one you’d avoid. I’d love to supercharge my 5.7 but don’t want to shorten the lifespan of the drivetrain or kill mpg. In your opinion, is the supercharger worth that extra cost? It’s gotta be a blast to drive, right?

 

I have the TRD supercharger, way back when it was the only one available, anytime you boost an n/a engine you will shorten the lifespan of the drivetrain, the more you get on it, the more stress you are putting it thru. Having said that, there are 200k+ miles boosted tundras on supercharged tundras facebook page, mine only has 90k miles on the charger 160k miles total, i did not lose any mpg. 10 years ago when it was 5k for a trd kit i would/did put one on, mostly for towing.

It is nice when you want to pass or need the extra power but i also have a dog slow lx470 that couldnt get out of its own way....you just adjust your driving, cant pass the big rig now....wait for a longer stretch of road etc etc. I prefer the lx470 in road trips even if it is slower.

It is your money, if the $7-10k makes you smile and happy then do it ! For that type of money today, i would buy a corrola/prius/camry to commute and park the tundra for home depot runs or road trips. Or if you dont mind wrenching and fixing stupid problems ( never in a toyota it seems) get an infiniti g35 / g37 to commute...

 

If your biggest complaint with the magnuson is the bolts needing a little extra time, every 30-100k when the blower or coupler needs maintenance, that doesn't seem like a big deal personally.

 

Just pointing out a difference in design, it is the most proven so many will gravitate to that, but newer chargers pump more air and are more efficient, are easier to work on, have more ultimate power potential and do not cost much more. Would i replace my trd with a whipple? No, but if i was to install on a new tundra i would get a whipple.

 

Your mpg goes down cause your foot will get heavier, smile will get bigger, and the wife will get louder.

 

Loud wives can be a blessing or a curse, but it all depends on the context that it's used in.

 

The wait for Whipple to come out with a completed 2019 kit with a tune is killing me.....

I don't disagree with the logic, but I don't commute. Buying this is actually my attempt to not go out and get another E46 M3.

 

I'm in the same boat but for the 2020s. The tune is the last piece for the 2019s, they fixed whatever physical deviation for the 2019+.

This is a good thread. I would love to see a dyno graph with the 3 blowers on it. I’m looking for the most usable power under the curve, not necessarily the most peak hp and tq.

 

And 93 octane costs 30% more than 87.

 

I already use premium cause it doesn’t have ethanol in my area. Probably doesn’t make a difference, but I don’t want ethanol in my truck. Or mower or generator.

When I had a sc truck, my mpg was crap because I liked to take off and hear the whine. If not for that, mpg would’ve probably been the same.

 

Premium is part of affording a boosted truck...if you're worried about affording the fuel, do NOT consider a SC'r...reminds me of MC Hammer's want for a Lambo...not trying to bash but these are all considerations when eyeing the boosted way...don't do it unless your truck is paid off...then your worries become much less.

Non ethanol fuels are great...or just e85...not the blends...

 

If someone is worried about affording the fuel, they shouldn’t be driving a tundra.

At stock pulley size they will all make the same horsepower, so if you are not going to be pushing for maximum performance, get the cheapest one (Magnuson).
I had several Magnuson/TRD blowers on my Tundras and they are fine, but I maxed it out at 14 PSI and needed something more, so went with a Harrop.
Now my truck hits 20+ PSI boost and still has room to grow.
Whipple may or may not have a slight advantage, but it just came out this year and nobody pushed it anywhere past stock boost yet on the Tundra.

 

I dont disagree. It will be paid off around the summer of 21, then i search for the correct deal and buy the SC.

Does stage 2 for harrop swap the pully and thats the difference?

I'm in the process of getting the Harrop.

 

Yes, 80mm top pulley instead of the 85 mm stock one and 650 cc injectors.
You can go down to 75, 70 or 65 mm pulley from Harrop or get a 62 mm Griptec from ZPE.

 

What PSI can a stock 2020 5.7 take before you have to start strengthening the internals?

stage 1 Harrop - no tune...is 7psi? Stage 2 is 8.5 psi?

 

There is no precise answer to this.
Some blow up at 5 psi, some hold 10 no problem.
Depends a lot on how much timing and fuel you throw at it.

 

I know nothing about supercharging/PSI/etc except the little bit I've read here. I was kicking around the idea of supercharging, but if I need to know all about PSI & tuning & fuel mixture & blah blah, jeez forget it. I don't want to blow up the truck from ignorance. I thought getting it tuned and using the tuner presets took care of all that stuff.
