NGL, you had me in the first part.

That second part is pretty far off track based on what I've seen of the kids in their early 30s and younger.

I may have just taken top spot as chief mangler...

Drive the truck home. Pulled up on ramps. Shut down. Changed oil in corolla. Changed ATF in corolla. Felt radiator of tundra. Still a lil warm. Turned tundra key to ON position. Temp gauge was about a 1/4 of the way up.

Drained block. Drained radiator. Filled back up with 2 gallons of distilled. Added half to aux reservoir. Fired engine, and monitored radiator fill port with distilled in hand. Added as needed. Burped. Put cap on. Walked to corolla. Turned corolla over to warm up, and verify fluid level good.

Come back to tundra, and temp guage in the red. See steam from aux tank. Ruh roh raggy... shut truck down, and coolant hoses from engine to radiator jerked twice. "Aw fuck me."

I went against my better judgment, but went with my gut. Twisted radiator cap half off with glove. Vented steam. Relieved pressure from system. Let vent. Twisted radiator cap off the rest of the way with leaf rake handle. PTOOOOOOOOOH! Fucking boiling ass water shot up like a rocket.

Left to cool while I went inside to grab a beer. Cussing myself the whole way. Came outside, and angrily smoked, and drank.

Felt coolant hoses. All were warm except for inlet to heater core. Back filled from blend valve.
    20210714_075527.jpg

I backfilled maybe half a gallon. Until water came out the top of the radiator. Backfilled some more because there were air bubbles coming out with water.

Hooked everything back up, and let idle. No steam, no bubbles. Temp guage where it's supposed to be. No heat from heater core...

@empty_lord or @BubbaW tell me how much I just fucked up.

Maybe it's just who I associate with, but all my friends in their late 20's and early 30's are actively saving money and buying houses within their means. Some of them better than others of course. I've met plenty of people older than me that never saved a dime. Also, every 6 or so months I'll see the question on Reddit asking older folks what they regret the most and without fail one of the top 3 responses is something along the lines of wishing they had saved more money. I don't think one generation is somehow better with money than another.

Mommas are always right….”Son, you need to save for rainy day(3 months worth). Was in late 30’s before I dropped the “F thu rainy days” tude. Fortunately “My 3 Sons” listened to that advice at a young age !

@Tundra2 ,quick question before heading to bank. You said “Drive the truck home. Pulled up on ramps”

You did this checking/filling while on ramps

Ultimately its up to the insurer to pay the bank back if a loan defaults and foreclosed or even if they need a mod to make it more affordable. There is criteria to be met in order for the insurer to agree to back the loan. If that criteria is not met the bank will eat shit.

That said they'll squeeze you as hard as they can. I was offered loans much higher than I wanted. They will usually put you on a beans and rice diet when they can, its up to borrowers to be smart about their own financial comfort zone.

So my dad has a '05 Tundra like mine. He's pushing 320,000miles on it, maybe more. He called me last night and apparently it sounds like his engine block is cracked. How and why, I dunno. Going to get more detail today. Anywho, if it is indeed a cracked block either a replacement engine or a new truck is going to be on the agenda.

Is it possible to buy a drop in engine for these trucks like you can with Chevys or will finding a donor truck be the ideal route?

If he does end up scrapping it, what parts should I have him pull for me?

The goal is to keep us all paying right? Rent or a mortgage it does not really matter. If you have to make rent every month it will take a lot longer to retire or to do that awesome job you have always wanted to do that maybe does not pay so well...

I would love to take the whole truck but I have nowhere to store it. He lives 12 hours away so it's not like I can store it at his place either. At the very least, I'm thinking about his balljoints if he's done them recently.

I read your post twice now but I'm not really clear what caused it to overheat. Not enough water? I really doubt you did permanent damage with this. Quit trying to take my title. :D

My worst fuckup was getting an RC nitro powered airboat. The first time i let my brother drive it, he hit the gas before i set it in the water, and i reached for it. 3 fingers had several bone deep slices. My brother panicked, i wrapped my hand in my shirt tight, and the hardest part was convincing my 10 year old brother he could drive me to the hospital.

Yeah, so it sounds like an overheating issue. The truck will randomly overheat, often even just at idle. Their mechanic has been chasing it for awhile and has checked the typical causes. He figures it's an issue internally with the engine.

The wife and I will both roll over 30 later this year. I'd like to think we're ahead of the curve in terms of spending/ investing, but who knows. We aren't swamped in debt so that helps me sleep at night.

Without going full PHM, I will say that the stimulus checks coupled with freeze on student loan payments has created a GIANT issue with regards to lifestyle adjustment and spending. We have friends who have the self perception that they are living within their means, all the while choosing to completely ignore that $400/mo payment (per individual) they've been temporarily relieved of. I'm not convinced all of the home buying is due to lack of spending over the course of a single year. It's because people think they have more money than they truly do, and shit will hit the fan once ol Uncle Same (i.e. Fed Loan) comes knocking again.

We all care about your engine! Did you fill it with the front end raised? It sounds like you had air in the line so the water couldn't properly pressurize and steamed up. If you topped it off and all was okay I think its fine.

I HATE replacing coolant. It never seems to refill properly and I find myself checking and topping off for days after. I refill with the vehicle level and running with the overflow cap off and heater on full blast. I watch it for a while, when it seems to balance I go for a drive and come back home to watch it some more. Then let it coop and start looking at it again. It needs to fully circulate and fill every bit of space before it will work right.

    Yes this

A huge drive for buying houses is the allure of historically low interest rates. People who don't look into things hear from their friends and realtors that now is the time to buy, DO NOT MISS THESE RATES! THEY'RE ALREADY GOING UP! BUY NOW!

Completely missing that property values are inflated and will drop soon and they'll find themselves upside down. Their realtor already made huge money and couldn't give a shit. Very similar to what happened in the burst 14 years ago. I've been warning people to hold off for a year or two, the prices will settle and a lot of houses will come to the market. Unless you are buying your forever home and are happy with the price it is not a good time to buy.

I can't speak for the entire country but where I live we have a huge shortage of homes. When we closed in April there were only 500 houses for sale in the entire county of 500,000 people. And that's all homes from $1-$10M. I don't believe prices here will go back down because the shortage is expected to continue for a long time. If anything, prices may stop climbing as fast but they aren't going back down unless we have some sort of catastrophic event with the economy. Obviously the situation may be different in CA where people are paying $800K for a single family home.

Wait a minute. Didn't you just buy a house? :D
