I looked for threads specifically talking about oil filter options and quality...didn't find one, so here we are. Oil choices are being more than adequately covered in other threads.

What in your opinion is the highest quality or lowest quality oil filter AND WHY, what style are they, who sells each, how much, etc?

Also, I know some of you have replaced the plastic oil filter housing. Let's document what's available in this regard. I know there are bits and pieces of this information scattered around in other threads, so looking to consolidate that information with links to other threads where necessary for a permanent mutual reference.

Genuine, WIX or Bosch (Mahle/MANN) would be my three choices. I have a Bosch waiting right now and it looks just as good as OEM to my uncalibrated eye.

Worst.. for me has been Fram or any Auto store brand.

Mobil 1 would also be a good choice too if you have a Wally Mart near by.

I use genuine Toyota filters because they are guaranteed to meet Toyota specs and they’re not very expensive. WIX/NAPA gold would be my second choice.
The metal housing replacement is not a bad idea. Nothing wrong with the plastic one so long as you don’t overtighten it, but there are some people out there that inevitably will.

I use the Toyota filters as well. They are cheap and they are OEM.

Objectively the best: Amsoil signature series.

All the ones spec'd for your truck will work, though. Take your pick.

Based off sheer opinion here: Toyota OEM

Growing up my father and I owned quite a few Toyota’s. And we had some very good mechanics at the time. And they all kind of said the same thing, there’s a reason why Toyota’s are so reliable and solid…. Morale of the story here: only OEM Toyota parts for me, filters included.

Looks like I will be buying a backstock of Toyota OEM oil filters to have on hand. Replace a crush washer every time too?

Good point on the metal housing.

I have heard the same thing from other Honda Odyssey owners too for my wife's Honda. Not 100% sure what "looks good" means, but I'm not too cheap to not buy new washers either. Either way, if it looks like it will hold with the proper torque and there are no leaks, I ship it.

For the drain plug? I like these. They don’t leak and much less likely to overtighten and strip oil pan threads. I use a new one every time.

I use the Amsoil ones too. There's an argument that the Toyota TRD oil filter is exactly the same except it has 'TRD' on on cap. I don't know this to be a fact.

Also love a Fumoto valve, big fan, never an issue for many many years on all my vehicles.

Here's a comparison on oil filters froms, of all sources, a Toyota dealer:
    https://parts.olathetoyota.com/tundra-oil-filter-comparison

I've seen that OEM filters are pretty good and the price can't be beat. I stocked up on oil filters and oil drain gaskets at less than $4 for the filter and less than $1 for the gasket. Placing a large order like 10 filters and gaskets help reduce the cost of shipping.

subjective...best filter comes down to personal preference, how often change, and driving habits. Me personally, never saw need for high end filters. If I supercharged then thats a different story. Whatever on sale/rebate works for me; supertech, fram, purolator, bosch, toyota, etc.

Another vote for Genuine Toyota oil filter (been using them since 1992).

And.......another vote for the Fumoto valve. Holy crikey does it make oil changes easy (I have one on both the oil drain pan and the oil filter housing).

Do you really have to worry about counterfeit OEM filters on Amazon? Anyone have a link for legit ones they purchased recently?

Only buy on Amazon from sellers who are actual Toyota dealers and you should be safe. I buy both on Amazon and eBay, but only when it's an actual dealer that I can verify before ordering.

It makes me wonder if Toyota is selling their filters at near cost to try and kill off the counterfeiters. I have never had a vehicle with a cartridge filter this cheap before.

Probably a good possibility that Wix makes the Amsoil and TRD filters. If not than it is just as good if not better IMO. This is the Wix I use for 5.7 liter and it's very similar to the Amsoil/TRD. Relatively cheap and readily available.

I use Toyota filters. Actually buy them at Walmart for $6.97. Its not often that i go by a dealership. Definitely watch when buying from Amazon for counterfeits. I also installed the fumoto valve, aluminum filter housing, and bought the motiv x funnel bundle. My next oil change should be easy peasy.
