Hi folks, I need advise. I'm in Canada, have a 2021 Tundra crew, love the truck but wanted the 2022 version. In September when the build option was available we started to build our new 2022 Tundra Limted crewmax. Worked with the dealer to build and do the add ons, chose lunar rock as a colour, did not select the TRD trim. The dealer did the build, we paid a deposit, and of course than the waiting game began. This week, by accident I discovered that Toyota no longer offers the lunar rock in the Limited without purchasing the TRD trim!! In mid January Toyota (not dealership) cancelled our order. The dealer discovered this after I called to find out why I could no longer build the Limited in lunar rock without adding the TRD option on the Toyota website. If i want what we and the dealer built it will cost me an additional 3K. I feel burned here, nothing but a bait and switch as far as I'm concerned. I ordered and paid a deposit based on what information Toyota provided at the time.
    Advise?

I guess you have to evaluate what is more important to you.

Some of the features in the limited vs SR5, in order to get the colour, or the $3k to get the colour and features with extra features you don’t want… you will add extra cameras, and the rear locker with crawl controls stuff.
Oh and the sweet 18 in rims with Michelin “Trail” tires ;)

if trading in see if they will up the trade in value to off set some of the difference

Yes, decission will need to be made, we moved up to the Limited to get some of the features, now have to decide if the colour and TRD is worth another 3K. I guess what annoys me is that they can just change trims and colours after the order is placed, and further they cancel our order without communication..

Yeah, in Canada specifically we are very tied to the “you get what we build” mentality. The online builder was quite glitchy compared to what Toyota would actually build. The dealer should have been able to verify that it was or wasn’t possible at the time of confirming your request. Hence my ask for higher trade in to compensate. I had to choose TRD to get the cameras on my limited even though I kinda have little to no need for the crawl control stuff!

Good luck with your choice, it is tough to choose given the sometimes bizarre Toyota packaging (especially in Canada)

3 separate Canadian dealers here in Edmonton told me they could order a new limited in Lunar Rock without TRD OR, back in February. Now I’m being told color is only available with TRD. I think there is still another unknown, hybrids without TRD. So I’m waiting until the toyota build site gets updated before ordering.

Limited was never available in Lunar Rock. It was always a TRD OR specific colour in the Limited trim. I have the original dealer ordering guide from September and went through the same process as you.

See attached pics. The "B" suffix is the TRd OR Package.

Looks like the dealer messed up originally and not Toyota.

American site allows limited hybrid to be configured in lunar rock without TRD OR, so maybe the Canadian model will be available this way too.

I doubt it. Canada has different restrictions and Toyota gives us more of a take it or leave it package on their vehicles. Very few options other than TRD package, which itself is a single fixed TRD package. I believe the Army Green is a TRD OR colour as well.

Respectful I disagree, I was able to build the limited Crewmax on the Toyota website in lunar rock without the TRD several times over a month. I know this for a fact as we were constantly adding and subtracting add ons. Lunar Rock was always an available colour, not an optional colour, all it said "was image not available ". We did our build with the dealer on the phone, and actually sent him our build code via the Toyota website. The dealer also built it on there order platform and submitted our order after our deposit was paid.

The Toyota website builder didn't go live until months later. So I'm not sure what website youre referring to back in September. Whatever it was, it was wrong. Was it for the 2021 model by accident?

The dealer should have been going by the vehicle ordering guide that I posted, which is what my dealer gave me in October and it was all they had to go from.

Yes, the TDR package is truly geared to off roading. I don't do off roading, while not intentionally. The all terrain camera is cool, but not worth 3k to me, well at least it wasn't when we did the original deal.

We started building this as soon as the 2022 was available to be built on the Toyota Canada website. I built our current 2021 Tundra TRD on the website, so I'm familiar with it's operations. It was a bit glitchy at first with some images not available but it allowed you to build. My point is, the order was submitted by the dealer with Lunar Rock in December. If lunar rock wasn't available, as was submitted, the order should not have been able to be placed. Waiting almost two months after I paid my deposit to tell me that build is not available is unacceptable.

It sucks what happened and I don't want to argue, but I think your dealer messed up. They placed an order for a vehicle that Toyota wasn't ever going to allocate to them and probably only realized a couple months later.

I’m in a similar situation. I put a deposit down on a limited in lunar rock…. no trd off-road in Dec. Dealer was able to submit the order and I have an invoice showing the colour, no trd package.

I got a call at the end of Feb from the dealer (Georgetown Toyota) saying they just got notice that lunar rock wasn’t available and I need to switch colour choices.

Went with MGM as I couldn’t justify $3000 more for the upgrade. Hopefully this doesn’t delay my delivery.

That's very I interesting, in a way it's nice to know I'm not alone lol. Did the dealership do anything for you? I can't justify the 3k, either, but I feel I'm deserve some sort of compensation, we had a contract. This is a classic bait and switch IMHO. Toyota needs to address these orders that THEY cancelled, they were placed in good faith.

I agree about the compensation but I didn’t bring it up.

I’m waiting for my truck to arrive before next steps. Hoping maybe to get some accessories for a reasonable price but I’m not holding my breath.

Certainly a sellers market right now

Yep, I'm sure if I walked away from the deal they wouldn't have any issues selling the truck. Ordered ours from Laking Toyota in Sudbury. The question will be how long am I willing to wait for a new build.

I don’t think the dealer was being dishonest. We sat in his office and went through the process together. He initially said lunar rock wasnt available but when he looked it up it was. He referenced that ordering was through a third party app not direct to Toyota. Not sure what that means.

I put the deposit down Dec 17 and they though April or May. He wasn’t sure if the cancelled the colour meant that the truck was about to be be built or if Toyota was just going through all the orders.

I can wait until July but I need something to pull out camping trailer ok august.

Yes I agree, I certainly don't believe my dealer was being dishonest. I do however believe that Toyota needs to step up to the plate for the orders that THEY canceled. Even if it was an honest mistake or system error, Toyota needs to take responsibility and do something for those folks that believed that they had a contract with them and a truck was being built. In my case we have a trade in ( 2021 TRD Tundra) I hope an extended delay won't affect our agreed on trade in value.

I'm happy to report that after reaching out to corporate Toyota Canada, Toyota has acknowledged their errors, and have agreed to cover any additional cost, along with the dealer. Details and timelines still need to be discussed. I suspect after losing our place in the cue we will have a longer wait for delivery.
