Hey all. I'm wondering what brand engine oil you guys and gals are using. I'm trying to figure out which oil I should use once time comes to do my first oil change. I'm not planning on taking it to the dealership or quick lube shops, but to change the oil and filter myself.

Which engine oil are you using and why?

As someone who has never changed their own oil and strictly out of curiosity, why do it yourself? I have read it's not much cheaper? Is there an advantage I'm not aware of? Or do you just not trust someone else to do it?

Again literally just curious not judging

Owners manual says use 0W-20 ILSAC GF-6..
So I just used this mobil1 advanced fuel economy oil, and a K&N oil filter at 5k miles.

I also noticed a 1-2mpg gain after my first tank, not sure if that's normal. There's much more knowledgeable dudes on this forum, wondering if anyone else experienced this after an oil change?

If you buy your oil in bulk with rebates it can be way cheaper. My typical oil change on my Ecoboost F150 was ~$20 with name brand full synthetic oils and Fram Ultra filter. I bought 20 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum for $35 last time around.

Go read the dealership/mechanic stories of over tightened filters, o rings left out, over/under filled fluids, lost mounting pins and bolts, incomplete services, charges for services not performed, crashes in the parking lot because they're in a rush, mystery scratches/dents that were "already there when you brought it in", etc.

The guy that started yesterday after getting fired from Walmart is the one that gets stuck doing oil changes. You trust him with your truck?

I’m running Mobil 1 extended performance 0w20 in my 2022

In my 2017 with the 5.7 I alternate usually between the Valvoline extended protection or Mobil 1 Extended Performance but will occasionally run Amsoil Signature 0w20

Wow that's significantly cheaper than paying for one!

Fair enough, I take for granted I know and trust the person doing mine

I just don’t trust anyone to care as much about my truck as I do. Especially when most service centers seem to have the equivalent of a fry cook doing their oil changes.

I switched a while back to Kirkland 0w20 @5k intervals from Amsoil 0w20 @10k intervals. The Kirkland oil is just fine, and two changes with it is actually cheaper than one change with Amsoil.

Mobil 1 (advanced fuel economy) because it works well enough for me and it’s frequently on sale at Costco.

Amsoil Signature 0W-20 with the Amsoil 15K mile filter. I noticed that the Engine was much quieter after changing to Amsoil. Almost 10K on this oil change and it's still really quiet. Will be changing at 10K.

As someone who has do it all his life, I can tell you it's way cheaper. I can also tell you that it's done right and not by some kids getting paid $10/hr. I have had the dealer do those free oil changes on my tundra and the next time I did it the oil filter was never changed. Not to mention when I got home I still had to get under my truck to clean up the mess they left. I can understand if you an older person or a woman, but yeah I don't trust dealers or quick lube places. As to the OP, use whatever is on sale. Chances are you wouldn't keep the truck long enough to even reap the benefits of a better oil, if there is any.

Never bought into the AmsOil thing. I generally use Mobil 1, Pennzoil, or Valvoline full synth depending on what is on sale. M1 often has rebates that you can apply even when you get it at WalMart. To begin I just got 3 jugs of M1 extended protection from WalMart.com. Not that I plan to push the miles.

And DIYing your oil change is actually faster than schlepping out to a dealer or wherever. And there are cold adult beverages readily on hand.

    Great thread.

Whatever is cheapest, meets API SP and meets Toyota’s spec

35,000 miles on my truck and have used 0W20 Mobil 1 Extended Performance with a Toyota OEM filter every 5,000 miles. May switch to Kirkland when the next sale runs.

Walmarts SuperTech full synthetic meets/exceeds Toyota standards and is $21.50 for the five gallon jug.

Odd my Acura TL has 200,000 miles exclusively on Mobil 1 and has never had an engine related failure. In fact, to support that, here is my valve train at 100,000 miles, when I adjusted the valves, which is a maintenance item for this car.

There is no question you are an auto enthusiast; however, you may want to consider sharing data when bashing products.

To counter your unsupported post, I argue through experience, “Mobil 1” synthetic oils are top tier and the results in my vehicles validate their quality. Further, there are many premium synthetics, given the many oil analysis available on the web and I’d use others such as Kirkland, SuperTech, Quaker State.

Same experience here. I swapped the cam on my 1994 Camaro when it had about 90,000 miles mostly on M1. It was pristine inside. Not saying M1 is better than anything else out there. But certainly not trash.

Toyota oil and filter from the dealership parts counter. I save the receipt(s) in case there are any issues down the road.

I kinda went head long using Amsoil Signature Series oil for the first 1000+ change. But from here on out, its factory oil changes for the first 2 years. My last car a CX5, had the dealer doing 99 percent of all the maintenance up to 161k miles before I traded it for my Tundra. 15 years ago, I would plan weekends on working on vehicles. At this point in my life, I'll pay the dealer or mechanics I trust to do the regular maintenance.

I've never used it before myself, but I may give it a go sometime. I am not a specific oil brand fanboy but I do like to know who makes the stuff. The article below talks about who makes Supertech and how to distinguish which flavor you see at your WalMart store. I have no idea how accurate this is but it might be worth a walk down your local WalMart aisle to have a look some time.

I'm a mobil 1 user too. under 30 bucks for 5 quarts downside is that Tundra needs 7+ quarts.
I use Toyota oil filters on all my vehicles.

Personally dont love 0-20 (stupid cafe standards) I use 5-30 on all my other vehicles.

When it comes to oil filters, I"m going to use Toyota brand exclusively until my warranty is up as they can always try to deny a claim based on the brand of oil filter you used. On our Subaru, the OEM one has a anti back flow valve in it that keeps the filter full of oil rather than letting it drain back into the crankcase (Subaru mounts their filters upside down) and not all aftermarket filters had this. Not sure if Toyota any special nuances in their filter for this truck but for me it's worth paying a bit extra for an OEM oil filter.

Havnt got enough miles to do my own oil change yet, but I'll stick with Mobile 1 like I have always used.
