Used fry oil and bacon grease. Does wonders. Doesn’t smell bad when you change it.

Is the Ravenol better for faster 4X4 switching? My 2001 goes into 4X4 in seconds in sub-zero weather consistently with the cheap Tractor Supply oil that I dumped in. My 2018 takes f o r e v e r with the factory lube and I don't want to make it worse.

I heard Ravenol is thinner and has additives for gears or some kinda mumbo jumbo. Toyota used 75w, so I used 75w.

Does it actuate pretty fast in colder temps?

Sometimes I need to use 4x4 at intersections or stoplights and it takes about 10 seconds to engage (or three attempts) which seems like an eternity.

When was the last time you changed the oil in the transfer case?

I did my first change at 60k. When changing into 4Hi, your truck should be moving. I think it may switch over while still, but I’m always moving when I hit the switch. Switches right over. 4Lo is where you should be at a stop, in neutral.

Lol, so you read all the threads with people going back and forth about what they use and recommend and decided to start another one?
    Under 2014 75w90 all three
Over 2014 75w85 or 75w90 in front and rear and 75w in the transfer case. The only actually approved fluid is Toyotas fluid, part number 08885-81080. Others on the forum have also used Ravenol 75w, Royal Purple Syncromax, Redline LV, and even regular old 75w90.
Your thread will now be one more of these same exact threads with the same exact information regurgitated over and over again.

    This is always very simple:

    1) Read the manual.
    2) Do what it says.

So we can have another one where everyone goes back and forth. Brilliant! Guess I’ll add my same blurb to this thread that I posted in all the others.

I am on team 75W for 2014-2021 because that is the proper weight spec’d for the new and entirely different transfer case that went into the Tundra in 2014. I read a ton of stuff on BITOG forums and found that 75w90 is 3-4x thicker at operating temp than 75W. Have people run 100k with the wrong weight oil and been ok? I suppose so. But my plan is to keep this truck far longer than that, so I’m sticking with what is spec’d in the manual. And unlike engine oil, the 2014-2021 transfer case does not have an acceptable range of oil weights listed in the manual.

I did use Ravenol because it’s cheaper. My thinking is that the correct weight matters more than the brand.

If you have your drain and fills done at the dealer, you should expect that they are using the cheapest bulk 75w90 for both diffs and TC they can find, even if the service order has the OEM part numbers (and prices ) listed.

I use RedLine 75w90 front and back and 75w85 for the transfer case. Changed at 40K and no drop in mileage or issue switching in/out of 4. I do try to switch it in/out of 4 one week even if it's just in a gravel parking lot at work. It feels like it shifts slightly faster than the original oil.
