    Hello yall,

While I know the forum is mostly catered to tundra folk, since all vehicles are inherently similar, I was hoping any automotive black belts could chime in on what they believe the origin of the sound found on my gf’s 2020 nissan rogue is?

We tried taking it to the dealership and of course, the sound refuses to show itself when doing a diagnosis drivealong with them (3 times now!). Luckily a different shop managed to replicate the sound and offered their two cents but said they cant know for sure without taking stuff apart.

I was hoping if what yall say matches up with the diagnosis, we can feel comfortable with spending the $$$ in going in that direction. the main concern is that we looked up that issue and have yet to find a similar video/forum post/link that replicates it which makes me worry we are headed in a witch hunt.

some details, it happens at parking lot speeds all the way to 20mph, doesnt happen in reverse, comes and goes sometimes but doesnt seem to be affected by incline, fuel level, temperature, drive mode (evo, sport, etc) and we havent had any major work done recently.

She did get it used from enterprise (lol i know) but the issue hasnt occured until recently. Doesnt seem to be related to the wheels/brakes as she had her rotors/brake pads and tires changed not too long ago. my guess is it is more related to the driveshaft or something from the spinning as seen in the video.

might be a more common issue as we have seen other rogues complain about the same thing, but the suggestions are as broad as the colors in the rainbow.

thanks to anyone who chimes in.

@shifty` (hoping you have a clue)

I have thoughts but do me a favor so I know what I'm looking at.

Can you take a picture of the area we're looking at? I'm not familiar with Nissan, but see what looks like a driveshaft with u-joint(s) spinning so rapidly I can't tell, and it looks like maybe it's maybe at the transmission output shaft?

I mean, if so, if you're not feeling vibrations in the driveline when driving, and it's not clunking when shifting back/forth between R/D, it's probably not the U-joints (although I've heard a dry u-joint squeal), is there maybe a bearing on the output shaft of the transmission that's toast?

    Sounds like a bearing....

How is the rear differential fluid level?

    Definitely.

I just looked, and apparently this thing has a CVT in it also.

Rear pinion, or something in the rear axle.

This is the closest vid (might not even be it but damn close) i could find with a similar noise going 0-20/30 although a lot harder to hear due to the road noise. Based on his comments tho, it seems that he went the route of having them check stuff, but ended up just giving up at the end.

    (in the comments)

""First off thank you for all who have commented. I know I had posted this video 3 years ago and clearly I haven't responded. To give an update, when I had the vehicle and as its stated in the original description, it wasn't the rotors, brake pads, or calipers that was causing the chirping noise. It wasn't the u-joint on the driveshaft because I too got that replaced and the chirping noise still existed. I got the issue inspected and even the professional couldn't figure it out. With doing a cost analysis of what my vehicle was worth, it wasn't worth putting money into it anymore. Therefore, I compliment all of you for talking among one another to problem solve the issue. If it was mine, I would give a blast of lubricant between the output shaft and the dust shield to see if the noise goes away. That high pitch noise at that same area happened to a few members here if I remember correctly. Good luck.

Not a bad idea. Some road debris could have kicked up and shifted it in a bit.

Just got back from the Nissan dealership that finally got to observe the sound in person. States it’s definitely the rear differential that needs to be replaced. Upon further asking, they said most likely there is stuff in there that lacked lubrication, that caused the sound, which they stated since the rear diff is a “non serviceable part”, they can’t just go in and lube it and stuff. Not sure if I buy that that completely and seems like a cover all fix all. Another shop says it’s most likely a broken component in the rear transfer case, which I’m guessing the two are renaming the same dead horse? As expected from the stealership, parts plus labor are expecting to be a couple thou.

A couple K sounds high for diff work. Just had a Jeep Dana 35 rear axle rebuilt for 1300 including new ring/pinion and fresh seals and bearings.

I'd call the differential shops in your area. See what they can do. If you are sure it is the differential. I was missing teeth on the one I was working on, so I know it was.

Yeah I think the price reflects that they didn’t necessarily want to “work” on it but rather replace it all together. Lmao like I said seems like a blow up the mountain to kill the bear approach but idk I’m not a technician
