Alpine ILX-F511. Game Changer

Tundra install went well.

Tacoma #1, notsomuch.

Steering wheel control adapter only sorta works, dash kit broke trying to install it, broke the aux plug off in the headunit trying to cram everything in the dash and to top it all off, my XM tuner either decided to shit the bed or is just too old. Shows as "not recognized or failed" when plugged in (it worked a few hours prior). To add insult to injury I have to take a bunch of interior parts off to replace the Pioneer mic with the Alpine one as the plugs are different.

So now I have a bunch of parts that cost more then the stereo on the way.

Have you thought about buying a vacation home or renting an AirBNB in the Central Texas area?

 

I justified it by telling myself it's 10% of purchase price, but really it's 2.7% of MSRP. It also annoys the crap out of me if a screen is scratched, because I know everytime I look at the scratch, I will be reminded how STUPID I was for not putting on a screen protector.

Maybe we can test it. Just not on my head unit.

The plastic dash kit is WONKY at best. @BiggHertz got creative with the dash kit for me yesterday. It was mentioned in an earlier post by @ToyoMafia , give yourself time and go slow with the install.

Personally I think whoever had the idea of making bumper covers & fenders expensive is a right bastard. These are parts that are likely to make contact with stuff. Being expensive is a dick move. They should be cheap, recyclable!

The dash kit (abt 10 years old) has been a POS since day 1. The bezel always pops off and it drives me nuts. And it is 10lbs of crap in a 5lb box trying to stuff a headunit into the Tacoma dash anyway. Was hoping replacing the microwave sized double DIN Pioneer with this thing would make things better.

 

I ended up purchasing the acc-hu-alp 1 and the newer version of the iDatalink HRN-HRR-TO2 to go with my

$170 ads-mrr universal radio replacement and steering wheel interface

ads-mrr. I am hoping they fit together without need to splice into everything. My previous harness came with the ilx-f309 that I bought used. I figured it was only another $75 to do things the right way and never touch the damn thing again after I get everything crammed back in.

 

To add to the fun, apparently I can't read.

Tundra had a TR1 installed to do the lockout bypass thing (works perfect). The Pioneer in the Tacoma had a "bench mode" you could access by pressing a hidden button on the screen. Ran perfectly for years.

Amazon apparently no longer allows TR1s to be sold or something, ordered a TR4. Come to find out apparently that is NOT what I need as that is a delay triggered relay, not a pulsing one. Anybody know where I could get a TR1 quick?

 

Are you needing the TR1 for the Alpine or for the Pioneer? If for the Alpine, this module does the same thing as the TR1, and ships from Cali so you should get it quick-ish.

I ended up receiving a 3 wire version that was different from the listing pics, but worked fine since the F511 doesn’t have a foot brake input to worry about.

 

For the Alpine. Pioneer (that I pulled out of the Tacoma) never needed one as there was a software based one built into the unit.

Sadly, it won't be here until the end of the week. Everything else shows up on wednesday. The Tacoma is my daily so I was hoping to get it put back together (and never taken back apart again) ASAP.

Guess I am stuck driving the Tundra (the mostest 1st world problem ever). It was a coin toss between doing my tacoma or the wife's first. Glad I did mine, she wouldn't be happy not having a vehicle for almost a week.

 

Mine showed up way faster than the original delivery estimate - don't be surprised if you get it Weds if it ships out tomorrow

Well I have been looking at getting a new HU for a while now on my 2018 Tundra. I was going to do the tesla unit but after reading all the problems and getting a seggetions from people on this form (thanks you to you all) I think this might be a better way to go overall. I skimmed this form and looks like people were able to get insane deals on this HU from BestBuy. I'm guessing no one has been able to find any deal even close to that anywhere? Is the best place to buy one of these HUs is from Crutchfield and select all the different parts needed?

 

You might still be able to land the Kenwood. Someone did yesterday or the day before

Nice thanks guys! I will try to get one tomorrow. I dont live close to a BestBuy (closest one is 2 hours away) so i might have to call and get details. If i can still get one i will have my brother who lives close go pick me one up.

 

They still have them as of yesterday, I don’t think calling will get you anywhere but good luck. I bought one Friday and they put it in the system wrong and called me to correct it. I was really surprised they even looked into it. Guy said he watched the footage and said he saw that I didn’t walk out with it after I paid for it. Anyway I was concerned that they would have been out so I asked if they still had them available and he said yes.

 

I went to one of my local best buys, and they didn't have any alpines or Kenwood on display. I will swing by a couple of others and see.

 

They don't put them on display. You walk over to a counter and ask to order it in by the SKU.
