I'm just going to mention that the one way to kill one of those is to vacuum gravel. which breaks off a blade on the impeller which throws it off balance which.... Pot Metal in the old days. That's a modern Kirby, so maybe plastic on that one.
Mom used to wax/buff the wooden floors in the house with her kirby. You'd smell the bowling alley wax as soon as you opened the door after school.

I love my carpet every winter. Already hating the not-carpeted kitchen floor this fall/winter. Like walking on ice, just less slippery.

Haha, bowling alley wax. Mine used to wax the linoleum floor in the kitchen. Wood floors were sprayed in Pine-Sol like the furniture. Can’t put into words how that smell permeated your nostrils.

Now that’s an old school Kirby, @NUDRAT. They probably didn’t make the carpet shampooer for them back at that time. However, they are built like a tank.

Do you think it was better back then? I often wonder because of how bat shit crazy the worlds become, if people in general were happier. My gut tells me yes, but they were not as smart.
Access to knowledge at the click of a button has been a game changer, good and bad.
But one things for sure, I wouldn't be able to learn how to do a complete timing belt/water pump (for instance) on my truck by watching 30 min of video.
Or a Ton of things we've had to do that we had Zero previous knowledge of.

 

If I needed to know, I’d just ask my father for help or look at the FSM. That still hasn’t changed much today though, internet or no internet.

 

I just added some ditch lights, in addition to my front light bar, to give me 180 degrees of light. Right now they are on 2 separate switches. Is there any reason I shouldn't wire them into the same switch? I dont really think I will ever need them to operate independently. I get that having the option is a plus but its also more convenient to have one switch to kill all the lights in the event that I come across traffic. Thoughts?

 

Difficult to advise as I don't know where you live or what your driving conditions are like. I can say, here in California where it's not legal to run aftermarket accessory lights on a highway, I sometimes run bright white ditch lights (except they're forward facing, mounted about where the parking lights would be) when I have to drive on a lonely stretch of freeway on my way home after trail runs. The reason is, it's freaking dark in the desert and it feels safer to run them than not. I have not yet been stopped or ticketed. But there's no way I could run my Baja Designs light bar and get away with it. Mine are obviously on separate switches. My accessory lights are wired so that when, I turn on my regular "high beams", the accessory lights go off. To oncoming traffic, it still looks like I turned down the brightness (pretend polite). So... that's me weighing in with my own experience and decision.

 

OK computer gurus, I've compiled a half assed list of a PC I think would be neato. I'm sure it's way overkill for me, but it looks good on paper. All I do is play old games on steam, xcom 2 would probably be the newest game I play, maybe company of heroes 3. And I always have a minecraft server running. Minecraft is heavily dependent on the CPU, and only a single core at that. Whadya think? Nothing I'd buy soon; just kinda dreaming...

Case is boring. And kinda low on RAM, the board must support more than that. I guess you can add later but still that stands out as the only frugal part.

I have three power max cases w atx mod kids. Someday I’ll get to that. Good airflow. But kind of a lot of work vs buying a real case. Just the new ones are so plastic and dumb looking.

Don’t see anything glaring other than I hate liquid cooling and not a gigabyte fan. Huge ASrock mobo fan, love MSI GPUs. Everything else you’ve got is what I’d order. Don’t have beef with your CPU/RAM choice but I typically run intel. If I had to choose today tho, I’d probably switch to Ryzen.

 

Always preferred intel CPU due to the heat / performance factor, but I’ve not built a PC in years, so the disparity may no longer exist. You can only have too little RAM, no such thing as too much. 32GB was enough for a gamer…… 5 years ago. Not sure what constitutes enough now. A proper air cooled setup with good airflow management in the case has always been plenty in our builds. I would still love to do a mineral oil immersion for shits and giggles one day. Last PC we built for my son (He’s the gamer not me) we bought parts from 5 different suppliers to take advantage of the best deals and came in under $1k. Got a smoking deal on an I7 and the graphics card.

 

It’s weird I have to spec out single board computers for tasks at work yet I haven’t done my own build in years.

Off the top of my head, I’d shoot for an I9 processor with an NVMe M.2 drive and a Nvidia RTX 4060, 4070 or 4080 graphics card and whatever is recommended for the latest games in RAM, then double it. Motherboard would be a gaming board with solid state caps for longevity and as much built in features (i.e. audio) that I could find. Most likely an ASUS board if a decent Intel one wasn’t available.

 

This quote is what I'm currently running for my rig at home, it's quite a few years old, but it's able to run every game I've bought on Steam with good response, and I'm using basic low-noise cooling in this Thermaltake case with air cooling. Temps never climb above 65°F at load with the cooler I chose that's extremely quiet unless major load events are happening. I'm 80% sure this is the ITX mobo I'm running in it. I did need to mod the case a hair to fit the GPU, and this case wouldn't work for any of the newer 3xxx or 4xxx nVidia GPUs, probably too long.

It's all running through my yamaha rx-a760 amp to my TCL something 65" TV. So I'm getting a lot of screen tear playing minecraft, and I'm pretty sure the amp and TV are doing it, as both are only 60hz. I set my vsync to 60fps max but it doesn't matter; it's still doing it. All my shit is 3 years old at this point, so I figured it's time for an upgrade.

So I changed a few things on the PC. Ditched the case and fans since I can probably reuse mine. Changed the CPU to the best single core speed out there. Lowered the GPU a bit since it's not really important.

I picked up a few hdmi 2.1 cords, so I'll run it straight to the TV for now and audio out to the amp. Ugh, I'll have to reprogram my remote now.

Eventually, I'm looking at a yamaha rx-v6a amp, and a Samsung s90c 65" to replace what I have now.

Internet side I stiff have an arris surfboard 1G modem and a ubiquiti dream machine router. My bottleneck there is suddenlink. I can pig 400Mbs all day on my Xbox, but DL speed is always around 25Mbs or so.

 

@bmf4069 Are you looking to build your own or have a local or online dealer do it for you?

Other than refresh rate, is the latency of the TV an issue at all?

 

Build my own. I bought the TV just for its low latency. It was the best gaming TV for 2020.

 

What card are you pushing that 65 with? My 1060 pushes a 50... it ain't pretty if I run an intense game, but it doesn't tare. Sure love that realestate for my aging eyes though...

It's very nice. I halfway thought about going to a 55", since I'm only about 8' away from it, but decided against it. Only problem is using the mouse and keyboard. It sits on the coffee table so I have to hunch over. I need a coffee table that raises up and sits at desk height again.

 

Look into a lift top coffee table.
