Looking at buying an ATV for our remote, boat access cabin.

Getting there requires dragging our stuff 150 down a hill onto a dock. Then walk to get boat (along footpath around lake). Load up the boat, then it’s another 150ft to the cabin.

just getting our “stuff” (coolers, bottled water, etc) is a chore. Getting building materials to the cabin is not fun.

I’m getting older so the plan is to use an ATV in the winter to sled our building materials and larger items (fridges, wood stoves) across the lake.

in the summer the ATV will be used to get our stuff from our dock to the cabin, as well as provide utility (shuttling wood) on the property.

it will not be used on trails, or for racing. It will be used to zip across the lake (1km) in the winter to check on our pontoon boat frozen into the bay.

I’ll likely be buying new. I don’t need fancy, but just want a reliable workhorse.

I’ve done some basic research and am considering the king quad 400 or Kodiak 450. I “think” either of these should suffice?

    Thoughts?

I am a Yamaha guy, so you won’t go wrong with utility machine in their line up.

    I have owned a Grizzly 350, 450, and 700. All we’re extremely reliable.

Buy the biggest motor you can afford/want to spend. I think you will appreciate the power and tougher suspension being that you need it to be a work horse…

Would a side x side be better for your needs? A Polaris ranger or similar with a bed?

For what you are describing, I’d get a Polaris ranger. Can get a four seater with a dump bed and they are more utilitarian than a quad. We use them on the farm all the time.

I think a UTV would be too large. It would do for the winter haul over the lake but around the property would be a bit much.

I noticed Yamaha and Suzuki only make atv’s. I am partial to Japanese warranted or not.

I was always a kawasaki guy. . .but in my opinion Hondas were always hard to beat reliability speaking. . I've been out of that stuff for ten years though
