When I was on vacation in Costa Rica, I surfed some fun little waves just off to one side of a rivermouth.

The waves would start way outside then you'd kick out when the wave lost it's energy from hitting the outbound flow of the river.

Couple of days AFTER I surfed it, and a couple of miles upstream on the same river... I saw this.

 

I bet that was a post event butt pucker. LOL

 

Witches Rock? That's where I was checking the surf when I noticed a "log" in the water. Saw a Margay cat driving out, amazing wild life down there.

 

No, never got to surf Roca Bruja unfortunately, we were further south.

This was the Sierpe river in Puntarenas.

I guess the surf spot is Punta Sierpe. I didn't even know if it was a surf spot 'cuz there was no one else out. (Just to make it spookier!) I saw waves when we were going out to Cano Island on a snorkel trip and told the guide to take me back there after.

 

Those are CROCS!! MUCH more dangerous and aggressive than gators! I bet you DI pucker up when you saw them!

Yeah, I didn't mind so much seeing them from bridge or boat, but knowing I'd been alone in the water outside that river was a bit unnerving. Especially when I learned that they can go out one river, and swim like 50+ miles IN THE OCEAN to the next river!! WTF?!

We did a Croc tour on a different river and saw some that were easily 17-18' long and THICK.

A surfer got munched at Witch's Rock 4 or 5 years ago. Most people get to this surf spot by boat but this guy went out from the beach which means you have to paddle across the estuary first. Bad, bad idea.

He lived, but lost his leg. And that was only a 7 footer.
