Any of you fellas have any experience with side mount tool boxes? Like the ones that lay flat over the bed rails?

Pretty much made up my mind on the Northern tool boxes but I’m curious how roomy they actually are. Don’t have them in stores so can’t check them out before.

    Thanks

My experience with them and the crews that work for me is not very good they are small inside and they leak. Give them a shot they may be exactly what you want or need.

I bought and received some large twin door black textured aluminum DeeZee models from Amazon. They are 5' x 16"deep and around 20"tall. Haven't got around to installing yet, but can't wait. Thinking of installing upside down and installing door supports or maybe just sticks for props. I will then fab secondary fold down doors at reduced size to form resting ledges that won't reduce my ability to reach in as much as the primary doors. Then the primary doors will keep rain and snow out as well. My plan is to basically use the cabinets as part of an entire enclosure with a whole new bed rail system and soft topper around the top inside perimeter which will allow me to have basically a box truck look and capability when I want or need to put up the soft topper shell. My whole assembly will be mounted to and supported by framework bolted to the truck frame, not the bed. It will have gates that swing inward with windows at the front and rear to allow for various set ups such as loading a refrigerator and easy front window and rear truck window glass cleaning. Busy building a home ATM though, so this project is in a holding pattern for now, but still gathering materials and planning.

    That sounds pretty badass.

I’m just leaning towards these. Low profile, no reduced visibility, keep bed still usable, and easy access.

just want them for small tools, my pouch, and impact/circular saw. Get them out of backseat

Why not a bed drawer system? I'm doing a DIY version. I like the weight down low and the security of the locked tailgate. That said, it just isn't enough for my needs overall as I want to travel and live out of my truck and trailer several months per year.

You might want to look at fifth wheel boxes as well. Just a low profile chest directly inside the tailgate.

Thought about Drawers for a long time. I just really like having an open bed and utilize it daily. Doesn’t seem like there’s much clearance after you put them in. And if I got a trailer hooked up not sure I could access the whole drawer.

Was looking for a nice used weather guard cross over for awhile but moved away from that because I would lose bed space and access seems like pain for working out of it

In my case, it will be 4 fairly large low profile totes and a pole with a hook to snatch em out one at a time so the trailer won't be an issue. At least you're thinking it through before buying. I say for your purpose, it looks like you have found about the best option.

    Smart.

It takes me a long time to make a decision about anything.
