Man these guys were baddest of the bad. So much B.S. to come back to stateside. We are forever in their debt - eternal gratitude to them. I never miss an opportunity to thank a nam veteran. My dad served on the USS Oriskany and was around for the Forrestal debacle, but the boots on the ground really had the shit sandwich buffet. My Uncles still never talk about their time in the Army over there.

My uncle was probably 17 when he joined, he was a crew cheif pilot on a Huey
He didn’t tell many stories, but the ones he did tell were always cool good times kinda banter. Like winning a monkey named Chester in a poker game, and then having to put a lock on the fridge because he could open it and get himself beer…… he wanted to bring him back home but he ended up hanging him self on his collar chasing a fly in the rafters

MACV-SOG were some baaaaad dudes. Highly recommend Jocko Podcast 180 w/ John Stryker Meyer: Covert Lessons from "Across The Fence". Different world.

My dad was AF SAC in the 80's and 90's and joined AFSOC from 2001-2016. I'm so grateful I was able to know a handful of B-52 pilots/crew and PJs from Vietnam era who hung around and hear their stories growing up. The youngest generations (to include myself) will never know the sacrifice they made there and the judgement and shame they faced when they got home.

And that's the problem with monkeys you win in card games...you never know if they like to chase flies or not

I belong to some war groups on FB and some of the comment threads are amazing to read. I feel like some of these guys feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences via written text vs orally. And I'm so grateful they do.
