Thinking about replacing my 01 rusty drum brake rear axle with a later disc brake axle. Am I on drugs, or is this possible?

It's covered elsewhere on here, search is your friend.

tl;dr - Rear discs only came on Sequoia, axle widths are different between AC/RC trucks and DC/Sequoia trucks. Provisions on the axle are different. You'll need to adapt away from LSPV situation, probably with manual PV. And adapt on P-brake.
