    Hello all,

My apologies if this has been posted before and having an annoying braking issue with my 23 Platinum Hybrid. The truck currently has 6,500 miles and bought it used a month ago.

I notice upon braking that a shudder or jerking happens right before I come to a complete stop. It definitely can be felt in the cabin and took it to the dealership in which of course they told me they could not replicate.

I’m assuming this has something to do with the regenerative brake system but I find it hard to believe that this should be the norm. Love everything about my truck but this issue has become something I’m not sure I can live with lol. Before I take it back to dealership, anyone else have this same issue? Was the dealership able to resolve the issue and if so what was the root cause? Appreciate any feedback. Thx!

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
Are you sure it’s not the transmission gearing down? At low speeds, this tranny be shakey but at higher speeds shifting is super smooth to the point where I wonder if the truck ever goes past 1600 rpm.

I don’t believe so but could be wrong. It only happens when I brake to a complete stop so was hoping someone has had a similar issue.

I have the hybrid so don’t believe auto start stop is on these trucks.

My Hybrid charges the hybrid hi voltage batteries when braking with dynamos and the transmission slows together and you feel a downshift which was told is normal and i am use to it.Note under hood and other areas orange color code is hi voltage stuff you will see under hood left side is the inverter just fyi. Also the brakes are a 2 stage system little braking slows the vehicle and if you brake hard it overrides the braking system to the hydraulic brake for aggressive or emergency stopping works basically same on highlander except it is awd

Gotcha! I’m actually getting used to it and the braking is becoming less annoying! I think I’ve learned how to brake and now it’s not so much an issue.

I have a 24 capstone and same "issue" does it ever go away? Or you just get used to it?

I have noticed this on my 24 Limited Hybrid as well. Only happens when breaking at low speed just before coming to a full stop.

Thats exactly when mine happens, it almost feels like the brake is slipping or someone bumped me from the back. I HATE THIS!
Any fixes? Does it go away after X amount of miles?

I am trying to ignore it. I have 1350 miles so far. It hasn't gotten worse or better.

I had a similar, if not exact same, issue on my '22. Last time I took the truck in the techs took it for a drive, replicated the shudder, and their diagnostic tools indicated the shudder was occurring when the transmission was shifting (from 3 to 2?).

They reset the transmission's learning feature. The behavior came back. Not sure if that's your issue and I'm not sure if anyone else has had the same and found a solution.

I think the issue was noticable around the 8-10K mark but my memory is fuzzy on when it started. Never went away but it wasn't identified as a defect either.

I don't know if it was after looked at again. Fix after fix after recall after recall after paint repairs after back-to-back mirror folding motor replacements ... it's a dealership's problem now.

I have this same exact issue on my '23 Limited HV. When decelerating from about 30kph to 18kph it shudders. Sometimes more sometimes less but always. I have narrowed this to the 3 to 2 shift as well. Happens in both gas and electric only driving circumstances. It is awful. Only way I can get it to not do it is to pop it into neutral before hand or drive in Sport mode. Not sure why the latter makes it go away. I am working with my dealer but path forward is not clear yet. Drives me crazy in the meantime. So much so that I don't like driving it any more.

I have the same issue, and made a thread about it a couple of months ago. Just as you come to a complete stop it feels like you are being rear ended lightly, just a light tap. -24' Platinum Hybrid

My '23 1794 HV also does this. I found manually downshifting as you decelerate eliminates the shudder. I think Toyota needs to go back and look at the transmission programming.

It would seem that way or at least until Toyota acknowledges the shudder is abnormal and provides a fix. Don't hold your breathe. Toyota is about to replace 100k engines as part of the recall for defective engines w/ faulty bearings/. internal engine debris.

I have been playing around trying to determine the precise circumstances and I have found just moving the shift lever to the S position makes it go away, not even doing any downshifting. Consequently if you drive in Sport mode it too makes it go away. Which makes sense as I believe they do the same thing for the shift pattern. Definitely a software problem. I suspect it may somehow be coupled to the regen braking but I cannot confirm.

I dont have any brake issues, in fact I have been absolutly happy with how good the brakes are on this truck for its size and weight. BUT! I ALWAYS drive in sports mode

Same in my 24 hybrid platinum. Can't tell if it's something with the regenerative braking or the tranny dropping into 1st.
My 17 Tacoma had a similar issue until a tune made the transition into 1st much smoother.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/2023-platinum-hybrid-tranmission-shudder.129866/

Here is another thread discussing the same issue.

I have been experiencing the same on my newly purchased 24 platinum and it has been driving me insane. To the point of really regretting purchasing this truck. It seems like you can feel every shift in the transmission shake or shudder once you really start to keep an "eye" on it. And when you finally come to a stop, it feels like you get gently rear ended / nudged with a final lurch.

Per the other thread, I have tried leaving it in sport mode, and it is definitely better. But you can still feel the same "lurching" or "shuddering" at the point of coming to a stop, albeit not as noticeable. But less so (apparently) while driving in sport.

A gentleman from the other thread who had the same problem had it fixed by Toyota with:
Is this only affecting hybrid engines? If so, is this a systemic production problem just like the non-hybrid engine problem?

As a long time Toyota enthusiast (entire family drives Toyotas (23 Tacoma, 17 4runner, 13 sequioa) and I traded in a 07 tundra for this truck, and that 07 was awesome!), pretty disappointing this gen3 has so many apparent issues.
