side note...that 0w-20 was kirklands...and it had ~18 dyno runs + ~4000 miles. and it held up well.

This might help...notice how 0-20 and 5-20 have the same viscosity @ 100* C. Wont be any difference once its nice and warm. You would have to jump to 5/30 to really tell a difference

Looking at flash point and NOACK volatility, 10w30 is their best offer. Better base.

Those are Amsoils numbers. Every oil brand will be different. Speaking of Amsoil SS 0W30 is thicker than 5W30.

Among those oils in the table 0w30 is the quickest to break down to a lower viscosity :)

He-he, I did =) 10w40 fills and couple of 15w40 quarts for top ups =) Took it apart when it failed and found about 1/3 of wear of the same engine model taken apart at similar mileage using prescribed 5w30 only.

How so? I’ve seen uoa’s that prove other wise. It’s pretty sheer stable. Mobil ESP line is also another good oil.

Interesting piece of information I learned the other day from one of Hagerty's recent videos on YouTube - The Lexus LFA uses 5W-50 oil and will not start when the engine temperature is less than -13 F.

Where it is less than -13 F in winter, Lexus LFA spends winter in garage.

11 years old me was skiing in taiga by myself in -20 F weather every weekend. Cold is better than extreme heat. Dress up in layers, eat fatty food, good to go. Body adapts to frost in like 3 days or so.

Well, then you a fan of Volvo 5 cylinder, too :) Sounds like a baby V10. Odd cylinder engines sound best. I had a 3 cylinder turbo diesel back in years, it sounded much more potent than it really was ;)

I just thought it was interesting - is that what Toyota considers the safe lower temperature limit for starting an engine w/ 5W-X oil?

I'm sure it's more complex than that. Dry sump engine, bearing tolerances, etc...

I'm not messing with oil viscosity until the power-train warranty lapses. There is no reason to give them ammunition to deny a potential blown engine claim (and they will definitely look for a reason to deny it).

For thin oils it is even worse, their grade margins are much narrower.

0WXX is tested for cold cranking at -35C (-31F) and for pumpability at -40C (-40F).
5WXX is tested for cold cranking at -30C (-22F) and for pumpability at -35C (-31F).
10W oil is tested is 0°C to -20°C.

I have never seen -20 in GA.

I lived where it gets to -40. Responders vehicles are kept in warm garages. Civilian cars are either started automatically to warm up every 2 hours for like 30 minutes or they won't be able to start, not until it warms up to like 0 F. Webasto and Eberspacher engine heaters are very common. Lucky ones who have access to electric outlet do glue an electric heater under oil pan. Big diesels are chugging for weeks in winter nonstop.

Engine oil is not a big problem there. It is transmission and gear oil that freeze up completely. PCV ices up and clogs completely, too. Any rubber, be it tires, boots or bushings are good for 3 years. Suspension is overhauled every 2-3 years. Wheel bearings - every 20-30k miles or so, if it was a quality bearing.

At -60F tractor tracks grenade because they shrink so much that tensioner is unable to compensate.

    Vodka thickens at -20F =)

I live in Boston suburbs now. We have no winter here, "tough New Englanders" is a joke, it's not that bad even in northern Maine. Few miles north, across the border, basically the same place is considered a resort, warm paradise ;)

We moved from South Florida after 35 years to NE Georgia and love the winter temps.

The only downside is that you can't do track day when the hi is 40 because you can't get heat in your slicks.
