That's pretty high then, but new vehicles always seem to add to the cost of ownership the first 5 years. Maybe WY will allocate some of the tax to stop the wind on the roads up there. :notsure:

So you choose to pay the taxes/registration separate and not lump them into the loan?

I get the point of not wanting to pay interest on money going to the state.
But if you would of put that same amount towards the principal of the loan in the down payment, wouldn't you be in the same boat financially??
    Maybe I'm missing something..

I would, except the payment is based off the total loan. Keeping it lower keeps the payment lower

Why would you want to pay interest on the taxes? To me, that's like lumping your property taxes into your mortgage (assuming you don't have cash flow issues when the taxes are due).

Right. It would of been a wash if you put that $2,xxx down at time of purchase to cover the TTL.

Let me put it this way, with basic numbers.

    Truck is $15k
    Tax, Title, License are $2k
Zero down, loan is $15k, you pay the taxes later.
    $17k total- $15k loan
    Or

    Truck is $15k
    Tax, Title, License are $2k
    dealer handles TT&L
    -$2k down
    $17k total- $15k loan

    Am I going crazy?

Correct, but dealers frequently fuckup sending a title. Not risking them not sending the tax when I can handle it myself.

Lemme know if this is what you were thinking...

A larger loan to cover TTR and putting cash towards principal will still have a larger payment, BUT less interest is paid over the life of the loan.

For simplicity, I'll forgo calculating any potential present value loss/gain.

Auto loan for $15,000, TTR paid w/ cash
    Total interest = $1,984.13

    upload_2024-9-11_18-42-24.png

$17,000 loan to also cover TTR, with $2,000 additional payment
    Total interest = $1,728.92

Bought this one in state. You can pay the tax anywhere and places like cali require you to pay there.

Depends if you put any money down, I guess.

Or What if I was going to put $2k down either way so it's the difference between a $13k truck loan and a $15k truck loan?
