Since I am idling with drive shaft issue- never changed differential oils. 20 years old, 135,000 miles. Change? Or not. Last truck was 92 f250, 250000 miles, never changed, no issues.
    What say you?

Honestly, I'd only dick with it if you have a LSD from the factory.

if you got that one wheel peel, ehhhh it's good practice? lol make sure it's not empty.

with that said.....my LSD fluid was black as fuck. And I changed it around the same time 240-250k

Can't hurt, and changing it ensures it's full of oil. If you never check the fluid leven and it runs low, then you will have expensive problems.

I'd change it. Toyota calls for every 30k miles or half that if you tow regularly.

But know what you've got in the rear so you know what oil to put back into it. If you've got LSD there's a very limited number of compatible synthetics.

Dunno if it’s limited slip or not.
No leaks anywhere, so have not been concerned with level. Also, have never abused truck. Back in my young days, changed differential oil regularly. But I severely abused them back in the day. Lead foot, youth and Budweiser powered.

You need to know that for 1st gen Tundra/Sequoia, unless you just want to go with a safe-for-everything fluid, like Lucas 80w90.

Is it too rusty to still see the sticker on the rear of the diff, by the fill plug? Have you gone to the Toyota Owners site to pull specs on your truck?

I'm getting ready to do my first rear diff fluid change on my '18. Bought it used from Carmax last year with 23K and now I'm about to hit 35K so I'm thinking it's time. It's 2wd and I don't tow. Rookie question here, but I've been reading a few posts about the LSD and people not being certain if they have it or not but I'm wondering if LSD is only found on 4WD models? I do have a sticker on my rear diff right next to the fill plug but it's just a few numbers and a barcode.

just be aware that the Toyota database may or may not include the fact that you have a LSD

The mechanic should've seen the label on the back of mine, however the parts store looked up my vehicle by VIN which caused them to supply the wrong differential fluid

@TacomaTRD4x402 - this is FGT forum but your Gen 2.5 has Auto LSD which uses brakes and has an open differential.

I meant to add that in my previous comment. The info I'm supplying only pertains to 1st gens.

Yes, with whatever fluid is recommended in your owner's manual. I know none of us ever read the Owner's manual, but in the Specifications section, often at the back of the manual, it lists what fluids to use with your truck. I can't recommend enough to heed what it says.

Yeah, I got all the specs and quantities jotted down. It was this talk about LSD that I read and got curious about
I'm gonna try and knock out some maintenance items today.

You can re-cap it if it's in the welded on rear cover. Dorman sells the part. You can either cut off the existing cover, drill and tap to bolt the Dorman part on, or have a shop weld it on. Beats replacing the rear axle housing, unless you have access to a good donor.

Thanks for the information. Truck has been nickle and diming me this year. Did the LBJs today with OEM after hearing all the horror stories. I did them a few years back with either Moog or TRW brand. Passenger side failed about a year later. Also did the front brakes yesterday. Got done bleeding the them. pressed hard on the pedal and the brake line going to the rear brakes blew. :censored: I don't have a lift so I have to work laying on the garage slab. Getting cold now in NY. Will probably have the local garage replace all the brake lines.

Sorry you had to learn about non-OEM LBJ the hard way. How many miles you reckon you had on the aftermarket when they gave in?

You're the 2nd person to have rear brake line blow suddenly. Last person was passenger rear. When it rains, it pours!
