I find myself climbing into the bed of my truck fairly often and thinking of adding the OEM step.

Definitely expensive and I suppose a Toyota tax for using OEM.

From those who have tried this step, benefits and drawbacks.

I know I am sure to get some catcalls from the strictly off road crowd, but my truck rarely sees anything more difficult than a fire road while camping or hunting.

There are aftermarket ones for a whole lot less.
Also, very doubtful Toyota is making that. They are just offering the product.

Just search Bedstep for other buying options.

Lots of complaints out there about the plastic step breaking on the aftermarket versions of the bed step which typically go for around $100 on ebay and Amazon. I installed the one Toyota offers on my Tacoma 10 years ago. No issues. Also installed the one Toyota offers on my 2020 Tundra a year ago and it was very challenging to install. You'll need to remove the plastic cap on the bumper and there's no room under the sub frame to get to the plastic tabs and release them. There are youtube videos where folks cut the existing metal sub frame bracket (with it in place) to mimic the replacement bracket. With this approach, no need remove the plastic cap and risk damaging it. If I were to do it all over again, I would have just cut the existing sub frame bracket.

Here are the instructions. The bed step part number listed is different, however, the install procedure is the same. https://www.cc-parts.net/upload/documents/k8089.pdf

I bought the aftermarket one off of eBay and have had no issues at all. I weight 225 and have never had a problem. I cut the bracket as the previous post mentioned. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy again

I have the Amazon special. Been on since Nov. 20, 2024. Uses every time the tailgate open..
Watch some youtube vid on how to install.. do not use the included bracket. Use the factory one, it is way more sturdy. The included bracket is very flimsy and weak. Bend easily.. there is a section of the factory bracket you need to trim out.. the rest is easy to go on..

I also purchased an aftermarket step on Amazon and have been very happy with it. I did remove my factory bumper support and put in the one that comes with the step. I wish I had watched a video or two skipping that process. It was not fun trying to install the one that came with the step. I may put the factory one back in come summer since I still have that one. I would have just cut it to match the one in the kit and saved myself a lot more work during install. The step otherwise does what it is supposed to do and with my Tundra lifted it was definitely worth it. Did not pay too much for it either considering how much some of the other ones I found were.
