    Afternoon, all,
Got a rod bearing going out on my '06, and I'm looking for someone who rebuilds engines in the Atlanta area. Any recommendations?
    Thanks

Call the guys at LexTechs. I prefer talking to the dudes at the Johns Creek location, but ... either should do. I typically speak with Ed (Hill) he's super easy to deal with.

They should be able to recommend whoever they use. But honestly, you're looking at just as much money to replace the rod bearing(s) as you would to plop a used engine into it.

I suggest doing some research on "rebuild" vs "remanufacture". I replaced the engine in a buddy's Toyota with the latter, fully reman'd long block from SunWest up here in WA. R&R went smoothly, pickup runs great again.

    Here's where I got one: https://sunwestautoinc.com/about/

Jarco is a similar operation near you: https://jarcoinc.com/

How do you know it’s a rod bearing?

    Hey Shifty,
Thanks for your reply. I have definitely considered going the used route. My concern is not knowing the history of that particular rig. I've been advised that a rebuild of my current engine (since I know it well) could likely net me another few hundred thousand miles, whereas a used engine might be and inheritance of more problems.

I'll check out LexTechs. Thank you!

    Rich L!
What part of the PacNW are you? I grew up in Oregon. :) Would SunWest ship to GA?

    Hey bfunke!
All the signs lead to it. An occasional rattle that varies with acceleration. It's not out yet, but it's on its way.

Rod bearings have been mentioned on this forum a total of, well, this one time I guess. I wouldn't be so positive it’s a rod bearing. Occasional “rattle” with accel sounds more like cracked flex plate issue that is more common. I would have it properly diagnosed before dumping money into a full rebuild.

We have videos linked in the megathread of a semi-common issue of flex plate cracking, that sounds like marbles rattling in the back of the engine. I’ve never heard of someone spinning a rod bearing on a 2UZ-FE, but you do you.

I recommend you check the megathread, search for the word “flex” on the 1st page, and watch the videos. There’s more than one.

Cool! I'm in Seattle, was in Eugene for a while before. Them Ducks had a great year in football!

I'm sure SunWest would ship but at a cost. I drove over there to swap long blocks, save shipping and core fee. That was a 3VZ not a 2UZ, head gaskets are a common failure on the 3.0L so there's lots of reman places.

    @Rich L.
Brother, I'm still in mourning. Great year, for sure, but damn, did Ohio State want it more. Ugh. Oh well. As long as we keep Dan Lanning. My whole family is still in Eugene. I miss it. Miss skiing Bachelor and fly fishing the Mac and the high desert. :) I'll hit you back if I can't find anything down here. Seems machine shops are few and far between, sadly.

I'll do just that! Thank you for the heads up. Of course this all comes at a terrible time for me, so I want to do whatever is best for the long haul. But also not spend a ton. I'll check that thread. Thanks brother.

Well, now that's two of you who are steering me in that direction. Thank you, brother. I'll look into that. :fingerscrossed:

    Here's the community megathread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

You should read it anyway, as a 1st gen owner, to prepare yourself for what we've all learned works, doesn't work, and fails horribly.

Here's the section discussing rattles, which is what the 2nd reply in that thread covers, mostly - what to maintain, known annoyances, TSBs and recalls, etc:
    • Strange rattle noises at back of engine, like marbles rolling around: Several people here and at other forums have found this issue where they describe the sound as loose marbles banging around. Then found their flex plate was cracked in multiple places. Ticking timebomb. Check it out and another one with videos.
