    To my knowledge, there is nothing special about the block, or any other part of the 5.7. It can be machined like any other engine.

    Makes zero sense. These blocks aren’t adamantium. And clearly companies are reusing blocks for new builds.

    The liners are very thin. You can get away with maybe 0.005” hone. But that’s it. Anything more than that and you no longer have a liner and you’re just using aluminum. You also can’t really deck the blocks because of the way the liners basically floating in the aluminum casting. You can resurface heads you just have to run thicker head gaskets. But unfortunately, you can’t do much for the block

    That being said, I’m sure they can probably be sleeved, but I don’t know if anybody that’s tried it

    old post from 2008 when it first came out, but it appears somebody has measured how thick the line is and confirms. It is very thin on the 5.7 like most modern aluminum block engines. What XAT is doing is probably running darton sleeves on everything which involves cutting the entire cylinder out of the block

    I think the design has cylinders that are independent of the block, like inserts.

    The deck is open, but the cylinders are connected to the block at the base. The liners are present as the aluminum is poured into the cast. The liners are spiny on the backside and the aluminum forms around them. Including over the top. Heads off you can see the iron to aluminum seam in the block. The AR series and GR series engines I play with are the same setup

    the darton sleeves replace these completely. To do the darton sleeves a machine has to cut out all of the cylinder and bore the lower half of the block to accept the sleeve which is fitted with multiple o rings



    standard sleeving might be possible? But I’ve never seen or heard of it done in these. you’d lose a fair bit of rigidity in the open deck design by removing the original liner to add a traditional friction fit liner

    Oh man, didn't try to hijack OPs thread, just throwing out another option vs a junkyard motor that may or may not have other issues as a result of whatever put the vehicle in a salvage yard to begin with. They're gond motors and despite there being a lot of inventory, they are not cheap, and it would suck to go through a swap only to them fight unknown issues.

    Getting a used block with warranty is probably best. The XAT is a performance focused rebuild, but it's a rebuild none the less, and is why I shared it.
