Hey guys my 06 tundra sunroof hasn’t been opened in years and the last time it did, it almost didn’t close. Had to help it along with my hand. I removed the motor and cleaned it up. I tested it out of the assembly and it works good. It’s obviously something in the sunroof track assembly. Maybe it’s gummed up from not being used. Anyone have any experience fixing this issue?
    Thanks

Clean and lube all of the moving parts including tracks, gears and seals. Testing a motor without a load may not demonstrate a failing motor that can no longer handle it's duty cycle demands. I imagine the motor is fine though and it's a matter of too much resistance due to dis-use and neglect.

It looks like the headliner needs to be removed to see what’s going on with the cable/belt. This is a more involved job than cleaning and lubing the track especially when it’s closed.

To get to it, removing the headliner is needed. But you also have to remove the plastics on the pillars, seat belts etc. I don't think you have shoulder airbags so you're lucky. Do you know a friendly body shop? They are constantly taking cars apart and putting them back together. I don't trust dealer droids....

Any and all of that does not have to be done. There is no belt but there is "tracks, gears and seals" like @Knorbes mentioned.

Also, there was no need for me to remove the headliner when I cleaned mine. Yes, half of the track was not cleaned/lubricated but I “bet you a dollar to a donut” if you clean the track portion you can clean/lubricate, you will see a big difference.

Given I don't use it that much and it had never been lubricated after all these years, I made the time and removed the glass/frame in order to clean/lubricate it's parts also.

Consider cleaning the drains located in each front corner. Many videos out there but this is my favorite Toyota guy for many things.

He is great! My only (minor) gripe is he does sometimes take the scenic route and when you just want the meat and forget the veggies, you have to do a bit of fast forward. And THEN miss something you probably didn't want to!

Totally agree but he and Timmy the Toolman leave no stone unturned. When I’m in uncharted territory, I’ll take every nut and bolt they wish to offer.

I looked at the motor gear and it turns a cable belt that is coming apart. The whole sunroof will need to come out to replace it.

Well that’s a total different story and important info.

BTW....attached is the Headliner removal procedure from FSM if needed.

Thanks . Hey the sunroof operates by cables and I believe they are rusted stuck. I tried pushing it back by hand without the motor and it won’t budge. Only Arnold can push it back.
