Hello everyone. My '22 Platinum with just over 26K miles started surging so I took Toyota of Dallas up on their offer to give me a free loaner while my truck was getting retro'd with a new powerplant. Well, that was September 25 2024, and I'm still waiting to hear that they've got a engine for me. I inquire on a monthly basis and am told that they still don't have a remedy for my particular VIN; curious though, as a friend was shopping for a Tundra in Searcy, Arkansas and told me they have engines sitting on blocks waiting for candidate trucks. I called them, verified the engine availability, but when I gave the service tech my VIN, I was again told that 'they don't yet have a remedy'. What could be so different about my early '22, purchased in April '22, that Toyota has yet to provide a replacement???

That's strange. I purchased my 2022 in March of 22 and just had my engine replaced last week.

Well hopefully, then, they're replacing in order of purchase date and mine will arrive shortly! Have you noticed any differences in engine performance?

The Toyota app will tell you if you’re motor is recalled.

I haven't had a ton of time to drive it as I have a work truck I drive most of the time. But the short amount of time I did drive it the engine seemed to run a lot smoother and with less noise(ticking) than my original engine.

No, straight 3.4 dual turbo v6. Definitely in the recall, but still NO REMEDY. I've been making payments for the last six months now with no truck to show for it. Granted, the engine isn't the only issue - rough down shifting at highway speeds, A/C must have a leak since it takes a loooong time to cool down, and the front passenger window regulator went out last spring and it took 6 weeks for the part to come in. During that time, the service tech had to tape the window in the up position to prevent it from dropping. Also had other numerous recalls, so it certainly makes a strong argument for not buying early models of new generation vehicles to give Toyota time to work out all the kinks. I know that the fact it was built during COVID didn't help matters either!

Have you run your vin to see what it says? Build date? Recall status? At a minimum they should be short blocking your truck, or you have checked into lemon law for your state?

I'll need pointers to run the VIN. I've thought about the Texas Lemon Law and starting the process, but can't help but wonder if the dealership will attempt to hang the rental expense for the last 6 months on me if I go forward. I'd asked about just picking up the truck and driving it until it either crashes and burns or they contact me with an engine replacement, but was told I'd be responsible for the rental expense! Between a rock and a hard place doesn't seem to adequately explain things....

Dealers are performing this recall in stages depending on VIN so if you have a later build date they are prioritizing earlier builds first.

Logged in to Toyota.com and entered the VIN, only to be AGAIN be told that a remedy is not available. It didn't give me a build date, just a dealer reference number. No link to click to get further, more in-depth info on where my particular VIN sits in the process. When I spoke with the tech in Arkansas who has engines, she told me that it's the full engine complete with turbos. Who knows.....?

I think I would at least call another dealer, sounds like yours is just sitting on it.

That's my immediate suspicion, but the service tech in Arkansas ran my VIN and got the same response. They'd otherwise have been more than happy for me to bring my truck to their dealership and replace the engine but can't per Toyota. If JRiedy85 who bought his in March of '22 just had his engine replaced last week then maybe mine will be up in rotation soon.

I think I saw an estimated recall schedule from Toyota based on build date...somewhere. I even think they revised it once.

    Maybe someone could post that.

Thanks for the info! Looks like my truck is in Phase 2 for engine replacements, though it's obviously slipped a month or so. I appreciate everyones help!

Toyota of Dallas had contracted with Hertz and they put me in 4 different vehicles, the last one being a 25 Dodge 2500 crew cab. Rode rougher than a old wooden wagon. I mentioned the discomfort vs my Tundra, and was informed by their contact person that they'd gotten so many complaints on Hertz that they transitioned over to Enterprise. They put me into a relatively new Tundra crew cab with 65K miles, but at least all of the controls are the same as my '22. Why do you ask?

Just curious if they helped you with something similar for that time. Not saying that makes it right. I like the opportunity to drive different vehicles when renting etc. (don’t get one of those E jeeps). Sucks you don’t have your truck but one benefit is you’ll get it back with less miles I guess. Good luck getting it replaced! I’m in phase 4 I believe.

I thought they were prioritizing trucks that were broke down and waiting for engines. Toyota paying for a a loaner for 6 months seems kinda dumb as there are obviously trucks not broken down that are getting motors

True dat! I was told that the vehicles they had on hand that had broken down would get first dibs, and others would be FIFO.

BTW, they told me that if at any time I felt unsafe or that the engine was experiencing any of a number of symptoms, to bring it in and they'd keep me in a loaner for as long as it took.

Intersting. Looks like my phase got pushed to July. Also of note is for those uncomfortable with possible failure with longer trips, from what I can tell you can just request a loaner now and until your Tundra is addressed.

That's what my dealer told me. I called a couple of weeks ago and they said they're currently only taking those that have broken down. However, what they said and what people have posted here don't exactly match up. There have been people who have posted here who mentioned getting a new engine without having broken down. Further, the other day I was chatting with a random guy at the store who mentioned he was in the process of having his swapped out - same year as mine, and he wasn't experiencing any issues. And, he was having the work done at the same dealer I had called! So, I just don't know what the truth is.

Unfortunate conflict on information. Let's hope our loyalty to the brand pays off, and sooner than later! This is our 5th Toyota, with my wifes 2017 Highlander being the only non-Tundra.

My Truck is in the dealership getting the motor replaced as well as a few other items checked/hopefully replaced while still under the 36,000 mile warranty. My dealership reached out and I scheduled the appointment about three weeks ago and they ordered the engine for me. They had completed 4 when I scheduled. Hopefully they have enough experience to get it done properly without getting so comfortable that they rush.

Nope, I would say nearly all the scheduled replacements are pulling motors that are running perfectly and getting scrapped. While guys like this are waiting. Seems like something only a tremendously large corporation could pull off.
